In the continuing humilitation of a once fine but now decrepit
newspaper, Trib has agreed to vacate Freedom Center on the near
northwest side of the city by a year from July. The modern printing
plant was built in 1981, moving all production out of Tribune Tower.
This allowed them to build studios for WGN radio and a tv studio that
was used for a short while.

Tribune Tower is irrelevant to the newspaper; it's being turned into
housing.

I don't see how that's enough time to site and build a new plant, so my
guess is they're going to the vacant printing plant in Milwaukee which
Alden Capital already owns.

Bally's was supposed to build and equip a replacement printing plant but
they made a cash settlement instead.

The newspaper was stripped of all its land and other assets years ago.

What is this WGN and Nexstar and News Nation of which you speak?

(Does anyone other than me watch it?)

That was never broadcast from the tv studio at Trib Tower, but the WGN
Continental Broadcasting Center, 2501 W Bradley Pl. The local news
operation, 12 to 18 hours a day, offered to cable, was shut down. That
studio was turned into the studio for News Nation.

Until about 6 yrs ago (time frame very loose..) WGN was available
on our cable system in Michigan. I actually liked seeing
their noontime news broadcast as it gave a different view
point and feed...

You mean the news shows, but not the commentary shows? Cause they're now

I took it that the tv studio had been used for only a short while. I
found that odd because even a small tv studio, properly done, can cost
several million dollars. Then again, CBS wasted almost $20 million on
the new Dan Rather studio when he inherited the evening news from
Walter Cronkite, this while the rest of the news operation was
subsisting on crumbs.

Yes. That's what I meant, which trots should have been able to discern as
those were exactly the words I had written. Do me a huge favor, will
you? Ignore trots when he flames me with his pathetic spelling and
grammar flames, in particular when he piggybacks on someone else's
article to do so. Nothing is more immature on Usenet. I ignore trots'
frequent flames of me. I would ask that you ignore them as well.

After the printing plant in Tribune Tower was vacated, studios were
built at bridge level. The Michigan Avenue bridge over the main channel
of the Chicago River is double decked. The upper deck is for the public;
lower deck was for truck access to building docks. The Tribune Tower was
immediately north of the river on the east side. There used to be a lot
of pedestrian traffic.

Very large picture windows into a radio studio were built allowing
pedestrians to observe. There were other radio studios in the interior.
One was a bit larger and could be used as a television studio. WGN-TV
news wanted something downtown that a reporter could report from or that
could be used to conduct a newsmaker interview but it never had the fancy
set for news anchors and wasn't terribly large. It was almost never used
and reverted to radio use.

WGN Radio stayed downtown after being forced to vacate Tribune Tower. It's
east of North Michigan Avenue south of the river on the upper floor of
an office tower; no more street-level studio.

I think it was all-news WBBM in Chicago that put its traffic reporter
on the roof of the building it was in. They gave him a pair of
binoculars.

Makes sense - Amazon bought the old Vancouver Post Office building
planning on redeveloping it for condos and a new production studio.

One of the site managers for The Man in the High Castle (produced by
Amazon) said "this would make a perfect Nazi headquarters!) so they
got permission from Amazon higher ups to use it for their show.

It was sitting empty so they got free use of a set they otherwise
would have had to pay for. (If you saw the show you probably saw a
building of grey granite where the alternate reality experiments took
place)

I don't recall this, and it would have been difficult to see much.
Starting in the mid-'50s, tv and radio were in a low-rise building built
as a stable in the 1920s that got converted to an ice-skating rink. I
guess there wouldn't have been high rises blocking views of the
northwest and lakefront expressways but you couldn't have seen much
else. They were at this facility for five and a half decades. I was in
it a few times and it was kind of decrepid and the tv studios weren't
exactly soundproof. For the life of me, I have no idea why CBS didn't
simply clear the site and build anew when they acquired it. There was
nothing worth salvaging about the building's exterior.

In the '90s, they built an outdoor set for a newly-hired weatherman on
the rooftop. He didn't last very long.

The place was demolished a decade and a half ago.

I don't see it as a Nazi headquarters. I always think of the austere Art
Moderne buildings, not a decorated Victorian building.

Did Canada build prominent federal buildings that were combined post
offices and court houses during that era?

Unfortunately that's incorrect. Subject-verb agreement is third grade
level stuff. And I say this either because I'm anal, or because English
is the only language I'm fluent in and as time progresses I see it more
and more bastardized. Hell, we have fucking moron on this group who
thinks he knows what it's like to "literally drive off a cliff." How
the fuck did we get to this point?

In all fairness I will say Verman is the best on the group at sounding
like he has perpetual hemorrhoids. He must go through tubes of

I'm pretty sure they didn't at least not in western Canada. FYI the
building that appeared in The Man in the High Castle was this one
before they started the towers above it. Should be pretty easy to tell
what was built in 1958 and within the last 10 years (e.g. the towers
above the main building) eh? (The 1958 building was what appeared in

Chicago Tribune to buy Daily Herald plant, move printing operations to
Schaumburg in coming months
By Robert Channick
Chicago Tribune
May 17, 2023
https://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-biz-tribune-printing-press-20230517-bqwl3op4wzcgpn6y5iaqtggcua-story.html

Years ago, the Herald was a chain of weeklies in the northwest suburbs,
but as population grew, it became a daily.

Population continued to grow and circulation improved. The publisher
decided to finance a new printing plant, which opened in the early
2000s. The plant never earned its keep and it was an albatross around
the paper, which is now a nonprofit.

It never occurred to me that Trib could be printed in this newer but
significantly smaller facility but that shows you how circulation has
declined.

Oh, and Sam Zell, one of the early vultures, is no more. The trib could print in Kinkos at this stage. Small batches for each town.

His nickname was The Grave Dancer. I guess we'll find out whether it
was deserved.
