HBO Max Is Now Just Max: Everything You Need To Know Including Programs,
Pricing & More

May 23 is, according to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, “our
rendezvous with destiny.” That’s because the company has finally dropped
the HBO from streaming service HBO Max and become just Max.

For those of us just figuring that out, below is a rundown of pricing,
programs, how the service differs from sister streamer Discovery+ and also
what to do if you’re an HBO cable subscriber to wants to access Max.

WHAT IS MAX, EXACTLY?

Max combines programming from HBO Max and Discovery. It is the streaming
destination for Max and HBO originals, Warner Bros. films, the DC universe,
the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and kids content, along with
programming across food, home, reality, lifestyle and documentaries from
leading brands including HGTV, Food Network, Discovery Channel, TLC, ID and
more. You can find it at Max.com.

See the list of programming discussed today and Max product features below.

service’s three-tier pricing is as follows:

Max Ad Light for $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year. Two concurrent streams.
Max Ad Free for $15.99 a month, or $149.99 a year. Two concurrent streams.
Max Ultimate Ad Free for $19.99 a month, or $199.99 a year. Four concurrent
streams.

WHAT ABOUT DISCOVERY+?

Discovery+ will continue to operate as a standalone service and “will be

light.

I still have the HBO Max app - it was not "automatically updated"
overnight, and opening the HBO Max does not prompt a "switch" yet.

But I checked the Apple App Store - the "Max" app is now available
there. (I'm in no hurry to switch - I will wait to see if my HBO Max
app automatically updates and replaces...)

I opened HBO Max this morning and was greeted with an error message:
"Something went wrong with the link to the server. Please check your
internet connection or try again later."

So the HBO Max app is now dead. I'll never understand why
companies/websites in this kind of situation give you some kind of vague
bullshit message that doesn't explain the issue and makes it seem like
this is just a glitch or (even worse) the problem is on your end. Why
not just put up a message that's actually informative and tells people
what's going on: "HBO Max has migrated to a new service called Max and
requires a new app to run. You can download it from your app store and
all your account info, shows, lists, etc. will automatically be
migrated. This app will no longer function."

That would let people know what's going on and what to do because not
everyone is hooked into the Hollywood news beat and a lot of people have
no idea what's happening.

I downloaded and installed it and so far it looks to be a seamless
transition. All my account info and the current slate of shows I have in
progress all transferred, including bookmarking what episode of what
show I was on. No complaints so far other than why is this necessary in
the first place? Why do we need a whole new app, etc.? Why not just
change the name of the old one to Max and be done with it?

Because that would have required two things.
1) To have the developers add that message to the current HBO Max
application so that after X date the message changes to something like
you suggest.
2) To have everyone update the app to get the new messages.

Without that there's no way to change the message since that is a
standard message given when any app can't connect to the required
server.

Yep, same thing just happened to me.

This is really obnoxious, esp. because articles I saw implied that the
HBO Max would prompt you to get Max. But they were too incompetent to
set that up!!

I already don't like how the Max app buries the cast lists compared to
the HBO Max app - you have to click on "More" now to get the complete
plot blurbs (sometimes), but always for the cast lists (and for the
"Add to My List" option too).

OK, interesting:

"Aquaman" was definitely not "4k" on my HBO Max. Here it says "4k UHD,
HDR and Dolby Atmos availability depends on plan an device." When I
start up "Aquaman" my soundbar is telling me it's Dolby Atmos. I assume
that means it's also "4k".

Maybe us cable customers will luck out and get 4k for the next 6 months!!

Completely hiding all “my list“ rules seems to be the new paradigm.

I just checked it out and for me I am on the Ad-Free $15.99/month
plan. It's actually free for me through my AT&T Fiber Internet service
so it's okay that I'm not getting the 4K UHD with Dolby Atmos. Plus
I'm usually watching it on my computer which currently has a 1080P
monitor attached so that's what I would be watching any way.

Surprisingly logging into the service went well enough. The HBO Max
page asked me to go to the Max site. There I had to login in through
my provider so it sent me to their site where I logged in and then it
kicked me back to the Max web site where I was automatically logged
in. Now it will store that login information for some time so I won't
even have to log in.. (It may sound like a lot of steps but it was
only about 3-4 button clicks to get through the entire process.
Surprisingly easy, at least I'm sure surprised.)

OK, interesting - when I check my "subscription", it simply says
"Ad-Free", and then adds "Manage your subscription and payment method
in your Spectrum account."

So, no info here at all for cable subscribers about 4k, etc.

So it's unclear to me whether cable folks like me are getting 6 months
of 4k, etc., or will be *permanently* getting it!?!

They also lied!

While most of the series they said would be 4k are - GoT, House of the
Dragon, His Dark Materials, The Gilded Age (and The Last of Us, of
course) - "C.B. Strike" is *not* showing up as 4k!

I thought it was odd that they were going to bother making that one 4k
- it doesn't seem like "Strike" is the kind of show that needs it.

When I logged into the Max app, it immediately and automatically knew
it was me. Not sure how it did that without a handoff from the HBO Max
app. But there it is.

If you are getting the ad-free service then you will not be getting
4k, or at least that is what I saw when looking at what the various
service levels provide. Now does that mean you should not be getting
it now or will it be cut off 6 months from now? Not a clue. Just from
reading the web site you shouldn't be getting it now unless you
upgrade to the Ultimate service.

Oh no, you can't be watching STRIKE. The evil J. K. Rowling was
involved in creating the show so it is verboten to watch.

So you pay more for ad-free but you don't get the highest quality
picture? The people getting the free tier chock full of ads get the
highest quality?

That makes no sense.

It's unclear: it's not the "Ad-Free $15.99/month" plan - it's the
"Ad-free *cable* plan"!!

What I'm getting out of this, is they are not treating these two plans
the same - cable subscribers *are* being treated differently
(effectively as a separate "tier", right now) than the internet
subscribers.

That's the real question - Is this a temporary thing, or not?

Before the rollout, no one had any clear idea about what cable
subscribers would get.

From what I am seeing there are two (three?) ways this goes...:

1) Cable subscribers effectively get the "Ultimate" plan, temporarily
(likely for 6 months), before they get kicked to the same service
provided by the standard "Ad-free" plan. Or,

2) Someone at Max decided to play "Santa Claus!" and decided to give
cable subscribers "Ultimate" plan access (permanently!?!).

(3) Option 3 is that there was a mistake with the rollout, and cable
subscribers "accidentally" got "Ultimate" plan access, and that will
get yanked in a day or two. If that happens, expect cries of outrage!
