3) Dreckweasel drops names to reflect in their glory. As usual, he
fails. So predictable, so pathetic and so talentless.

PS: As an aside, I pulled up the last 10,000 posts and discovered that
over 68% were from F'losers I killfiled AKA The Usual Rejects. I have no
idea how many of the remainder were posts that directly replied to
Little Willie Douchebag but it's fair to guess a substantial part of the
remaining 32%.

Like I said, the influence of Phil Ochs on my poetry seems obvious, really.

Pendragon wants to troll me some more about the Phil Ochs influence, but even he should understand, it isn't his call to judge who or what my influences are.

All I've been doing is asking you to explain how Ochs' songs affected your poetry.

If you're unable to do so, then Ochs wasn't an influence on your poetry.

Ochs may have inspired you to seek a career as a singer-songwriter, but inspiration and influence are two very different things.

The thesaurus is not your friend. Learn what words mean and use them correctly.

Phil Ochs was an influence on my writing style and choice of subjects, for starters.

I see that Neil Young agrees with me, as he comes Phil Ochs as a "major influence":

Subjects are not style, Donkey.

I sincerely doubt that Neil Young has ever heard of you, much less who influenced your work.
You certainly are one delusional donkey, Donkey.

That's pretty funny coming from you, Pendragon, after showing that you're so delusional that you believe you're a better poet than T.S. Eliot.

Like I said...

Eliot's not bad. I just happen to be better.

COUSIN NANCY

Miss Nancy Ellicott
Strode across the hills and broke them,
Rode across the hills and broke them—
The barren New England hills—
Riding to hounds
Over the cow-pasture.

Miss Nancy Ellicott smoked
And danced all the modern dances;
And her aunts were not quite sure how they felt about it,
But they knew that it was modern.

Upon the glazen shelves kept watch
Matthew and Waldo, guardians of the faith,
The army of unalterable law.

-- T. S. Eliot, “Cousin Nancy,” from Poetry 7, no. 1 (October 1915): 22.

HICKSVILLE
(July 2020)

The sun is sleeping in;
the morning sky
Dons lifeless robes of grey and somber tone,
While straggling bursts from last night's bout of rain
Wash every trace of color from the world.

Trainbound, I watch as blackened railroad ties
Lay down their trail of timeworn dragon bone,
And know that I must pass this way again --
The timeline of my coming days unfurled
In iron rails that stretch across the land.

From New York City to my nine-to-five:
Woodside, Kew Gardens, Hollis, Floral Park
New Hyde Park, Mineola, Carle Place…
Each stop along the railway duly planned;
My ticket punched, I'm scheduled to arrive
In Hicksville at 8:50 on the mark.

A black cloth patch obscures my lower face
-- A safety mask to hold the death in check --
I rest my head against the windowpane,
And watch the grey pervade the empty car
And let my thoughts drift in and out of sleep.

Just one more stop before my morning trek
Comes to its end and I tie on my chain
And search the heavens for my Eastern star
Then hit the platform with my fellow sheep
Who hear the taxman bleating at their back.

The mortgage must be paid, life's wages won,
The weary hunter stalks his payroll prey;
Scans his I.D. and snarls at the clock.

A bagel and some coffee, sweet and black;
Another same old working day begun --
I count the hours, and feel my hair turn grey
And stow my feelings under key and lock.

The train continues toward its final stop
As puddles gather on the concrete strand;
The morning shower slows… plip-plop… plip plop
Death scurries by with raindrops in his hand.

Can you explain why you have the delusional idea that you're a better poet than T.S. Eliot, Pendragon?

Do tell.

I picked the first Eliot poem my Google search pulled up, randomly selected one of my poems from my most recent collection, and placed the two together for readers to decide.

I don't particularly care for Eliot's poem. The first line is strong, the second merely repetitive, and the stanza peters out fast from there. The third stanza begins (and reads) awkwardly, and the character/narrative is never fleshed out. It's a portrait in outline form -- introducing a potentially interesting character, then dropping her after only one-dimension of her personality has been explored.

My poem is... well, mine.

Readers are free to disagree with my evaluation.

COUSIN NANCY

Miss Nancy Ellicott
Strode across the hills and broke them,
Rode across the hills and broke them—
The barren New England hills—
Riding to hounds
Over the cow-pasture.

Miss Nancy Ellicott smoked
And danced all the modern dances;
And her aunts were not quite sure how they felt about it,
But they knew that it was modern.

Upon the glazen shelves kept watch
Matthew and Waldo, guardians of the faith,
The army of unalterable law.

-- T. S. Eliot, “Cousin Nancy,” from Poetry 7, no. 1 (October 1915): 22.

HICKSVILLE
(July 2020)

The sun is sleeping in;
the morning sky
Dons lifeless robes of grey and somber tone,
While straggling bursts from last night's bout of rain
Wash every trace of color from the world.

Trainbound, I watch as blackened railroad ties
Lay down their trail of timeworn dragon bone,
And know that I must pass this way again --
The timeline of my coming days unfurled
In iron rails that stretch across the land.

From New York City to my nine-to-five:
Woodside, Kew Gardens, Hollis, Floral Park
New Hyde Park, Mineola, Carle Place…
Each stop along the railway duly planned;

The mortgage must be paid, life's wages won,
The weary hunter stalks his payroll prey;
Scans his I.D. and snarls at the clock.

A bagel and some coffee, sweet and black;
Another same old working day begun --
I count the hours, and feel my hair turn grey
And stow my feelings under key and lock.

The train continues toward its final stop
As puddles gather on the concrete strand;
The morning shower slows… plip-plop… plip plop
Death scurries by with raindrops in his hand.

-- Michael Pendragon, "Hicksville," from A Year of Sundays, July 2020.

Doc wrote style AND subjects, Pen.... wake up... ha ha.

And here's more about how Neil Young says he was influenced by Phil Ochs (and since N.Y. doesn't post on Usenet, he doesn't have a little ape boy to harass him about it)...

http://neilyoungnews.thrasherswheat.org/2011/02/neil-young-and-phil-ochs.html

************ 1977 Decade box album, Neil's hand written note about the song "Cinnamon Girl" says:
"Wrote this for a city girl on peeling pavement coming at me thru Phil Ochs eyes playing finger cymbals.

It was hard to explain to my wife."
We still have no idea what "Phil Ochs eyes" means but it indicates that Neil and Phil connected back in the 1960's. (For more, see, So Who Was The "Cinnamon Girl"? The Story Behind The Song.)

In a 1969 interview on KSAN radio with Neil Young, he is asked about Dylan's music and admits that he didn't even own a Bob Dylan album for fear of being influenced by it. Young then goes on to site Phil Ochs as a major influence. Young adds that he considered Ochs and Dylan on the same level

Probably the answer is that Pendragon's just trolling, even he couldn't be that delusional to believe he's even in the same league as T.S. Eliot:

https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poets/t-s-eliot

"...1948 winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, T.S. Eliot is highly distinguished as a poet, a literary critic, a dramatist, an editor, and a publisher. In 1910 and 1911, while still a college student, he wrote “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock,” published in Poetry magazine, and other poems that are landmarks in the history of modern literature. Eliot’s most notable works include The Waste Land (1922), Four Quartets (1943), and the play Murder in the Cathedral (1935). Eliot’s awards and honors include the British Order of Merit and the Nobel Prize for Literature. His play The Cocktail Party won the 1950 Tony Award for Best Play. In 1964, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats was famously adapted in 1981 into the musical Cats, which won seven Tony Awards."

Unless Phil Ochs was writing about the life of a Donkey, they didn't even share subjects. Donkey's poems are all about... Donkey.

Nice of you to leave off from quoting my exchange with the Donkey regarding Young. Here it is:

DONKEY: I see that Neil Young agrees with me, as he comes Phil Ochs as a "major influence":
MMP: I sincerely doubt that Neil Young has ever heard of you, much less who influenced your work.

Nothing you've quoted in any way suggests that Neil Young has ever heard of the Donkey. And how am I harassing him by expressing my doubt that he knows (or even knows of) an illiterate pissbum from GA?

Stop lying, Donkey. I didn't say that I was in his "league" (by which one assumes you're referring to his success, Nobel prize, etc.).

I said that, as good a poet as Mr. Eliot is, I just so happen to be a better one.

But don't take my word for it. Read us both, and judge for yourself:

COUSIN NANCY

Miss Nancy Ellicott
Strode across the hills and broke them,
Rode across the hills and broke them—
The barren New England hills—
Riding to hounds
Over the cow-pasture.

Miss Nancy Ellicott smoked
And danced all the modern dances;
And her aunts were not quite sure how they felt about it,
But they knew that it was modern.

Upon the glazen shelves kept watch
Matthew and Waldo, guardians of the faith,
The army of unalterable law.

-- T. S. Eliot, “Cousin Nancy,” from Poetry 7, no. 1 (October 1915): 22.

HICKSVILLE
(July 2020)

The sun is sleeping in;
the morning sky
Dons lifeless robes of grey and somber tone,
While straggling bursts from last night's bout of rain
Wash every trace of color from the world.

Trainbound, I watch as blackened railroad ties
Lay down their trail of timeworn dragon bone,
And know that I must pass this way again --
The timeline of my coming days unfurled
In iron rails that stretch across the land.

From New York City to my nine-to-five:
Woodside, Kew Gardens, Hollis, Floral Park
New Hyde Park, Mineola, Carle Place…
Each stop along the railway duly planned;

The mortgage must be paid, life's wages won,
The weary hunter stalks his payroll prey;
Scans his I.D. and snarls at the clock.

A bagel and some coffee, sweet and black;
Another same old working day begun --
I count the hours, and feel my hair turn grey
And stow my feelings under key and lock.

The train continues toward its final stop
As puddles gather on the concrete strand;
The morning shower slows… plip-plop… plip plop
Death scurries by with raindrops in his hand.

-- Michael Pendragon, "Hicksville," from A Year of Sundays, July 2020.
