While I have not finished grading for the year yet, I have completely
finished grading for my *main* job (though I still have to submit those
grades!)... I will likely finish off grading for my side-job tomorrow
(Tues), as I am taking today (Mon) entirely off as a "holiday"!

Yesterday, I got through...:

soaps: GH - Thur's ep. I think pretty much nothing happened in this
one, except I guess Curtis decided to try to give his marriage to (the
lying liar!) Portia a go. Meanwhile, Jordan (who really is a snake when
it comes to personal relationships!) was all wringing her hands over
kissing Curtis, and what it means... Meanwhile, we get the new (temp?)
Molly, and I don't like her as much as I was hoping I would. It looks
like they misfired on both the Kristina and Molly recasts... :/

golf - As I kind of expected, English newbie golfer Harry Hall choked
on the last day, and fell out of the lead. Harris English also fell
down the leaderboard on Day 4.
But Adam Shenk held on and hung around. Meanwhile, Argentinian
golfer Emiliano Grillo kind of surged from a few back on Day 3 to vault
into the lead, and held on for a lead-tie. (Though Grillo nearly threw
it away on the 18th hole, when his ball landed in a drainage ditch with
running water that carried his ball from near the green to almost all
the way back to the tee!! which forced him to take a double-bogey on
the 18th!)
This led to a 2-hole playoff between Grillo and Schenk. But Grillo
hit a nearly perfect shot on the second playoff hole, for an easy
birdie, giving Grillo his first win on the tour in almost 8 years!!

The Blacklist (recorded) - "Dr. Michael Abani" (ep. #10.12). Another
dud of an episode - why is it that the "Dembe episodes", which should
be among the show's best, are generally among the show's least
interesting?!
In this one, we get background on Dembe's "baby momma", when she
contacts him after her finace is taken captive by the Yemeni government
(the finace works as an aid-doctor there).
FTR, the episode is even mistitled, as the finace is not even an
actual "blacklister".
Anyway, with Ressler's, and eventually Red's, help, Dembe clears the
fiance of the charges against him, and helps rescue both the finace,
and eventually the baby momma too, rekindling the flame with her the
whole time.
Meh.
And another episode with poor use of Red...

Sicario: Day of the Soldado (Hulu) - I've been wanting to watch this
sequel for a while (it was locked up by Starz for quite some time...).
To avoid the sound issues I have been having with my Apple TV box, I
watched this via of the Hulu app on my LG smart TV.
This looked pretty good on the TV, even not being in 4k.
I think I liked this one more than the first film, as there's more
going on here than just cartel stuff - this one brings in a "terrorist"
angle (though unfortuntely, that gets pretty much dropped in the
second-half of the movie).
In this one, Josh Brolin and Benicio del Toro are back, and this
time, to get back at the Mexican cartels that smuggled a terrorist into
the U.S. before an attack, they conpsire to start a cartel war by
kidnapping the 16-year old daughter (Isabela Moner, back when she went
by that name...) of the leader of one of the cartels.
Of course, later, the teenager becomes "inconvenient" for the U.S.
gov't, so Brolin's boss (Catherine Keener) orders her rubbed out. Which
Brolin doesn't want to do, and del Toro outright refuses to do! So, you
know - problems!
This film is mostly good, though it falters a little at the end, and
I would have preferred a more definitive ending...
Apparently another sequel is in development, but it's been in
development for a while, so I'll believe it when they actually start
filming...

Recorded for later: The Blacklist(!(??)!).

And what did you watch?

You paid close enough attention to this episode to actually know what
happened in it? I tuned out early on and it was just background noise.

I was going to watch this paired with some other movies last year but my
screen hadn't been installed yet so it got pushed way, way back. Now
it's coming up again in a few months.

(it was locked up by Starz for quite some time...).

I watched

Wonder Woman (4K disc) 2017 superhero movie starring Gal Gadot as Wonder
Woman. Wonder Woman is the first Avenger and with shield in hand,
assembles a team of Howling Commandos to fight Germans during a World
War. I think I might have seen this plot someone else before, but I
can't remember where. Anyway, I've never loved the movie the way some
others have, but it always manages to entertain.

Wonder Woman 1984 (4K disc) 2020 sequel which finds Wonder Woman going
up against The Mandalorian to stop him from monkey pawing the world into
oblivion. She also also to take out Cheetah while looking cool in
golden armor. Sure the movie has problems, but it passed the time.

Silo (AppleTV+) "The Janitor's Boy" - Things pick up with this episode
as the new sheriff's proves too competent so they try to throw her off a
balcony.

Succession - "With Open Eyes" - Series finale has the three Roy Siblings
battling for control of their father's company as the GoJo deal is ready
to close. I guess it was an OK way to end the series. I really didn't
like any of the characters, so I didn't care who won in the end.

The Little Mermaid (theatrical) 2023 live action version of the Disney
animated musical. These Disney live actions can be hit or miss, but
this was definitely one of the better ones. Same plot, same songs
(mostly), but better than the original. The only other live action
update I liked more than the original was The Jungle Book.

Huh Ian J. Ball <IJBall@mac.invalid> wrote:
>

Hey, thanks for asking!

The worst episode ever of DEATH IN PARADISE, S12E02 which the always wrong
PBS station says the episode title of which is “death in Paradise“.

For some reason, they decided they had to be all politically correct on the
subject of survivalists. So when one of them is murdered, they keep
explaining that they aren’t called survivalist anymore. They are preppers
just getting ready for whatever is going to happen and that they aren’t
selfish and trying to save themselves they are just making sure that
they’ll be ready to come out of their underground bunkers and help all the
survivors on the surface. Because that makes sense. And they aren’t hiding
from atomic war anymore. They are hiding from economic collapse. I have no
idea why people out in the boondocks of a tropical island have to go
underground to hide from economic collapse. And their bunker doesn’t have
any kind of air filtration system just ductwork that goes straight up to
the surface and is covered with chicken wire. I have no idea why you need
an underground bunker if you’re just going to breathe the outside air.

So the victim has been providing them funding and was going to cancel it so
they killed him in the bunker to stop him from canceling the funding.
Because, again, that makes sense.

And the reason they have a locked room mystery is a complete accident. The
killer makes up some poison coffee (which the victim doesn’t need because
the one thing the bunker has is a coffee maker) and when he goes to bring
it to the victim, the victim says “no don’t come in the front door and be
seen by the video camera go over to the top and hand, the coffee down
beside the video camera so the video camera can’t see it and give it to me
that way“

Oh, and the “thick steel“ (which was quarter inch plywood) door was secured
with a big ass slide bolt from the inside. They skipped showing how the
police made their way past that door without breaking it.

Apparently the killers plan was to stand right in front of the video
cameras, so it could record him delivering poison coffee.

But by having to hand the coffee down to the bunker and not get in front of
the camera, he had to put his hands all over the concrete door frame and
left cyanide Fingerprints. No, seriously. His hands were all covered in
cyanide. And so he left his own cyanide dust fingerprints all over the top
of the door frame.

There was some interpersonal stuff with the staff of the police station,
which was all equally stupid.

And in a first for the show it ended on a cliffhanger with somebody evil
evilly stalking somebody from the cops or their friends. How evil!

I left COLOMBO running in the background on GAC. I never watched it first
run unless it had a guest store I really liked. I guess I can see why
people get hooked on it although I’m not going to be one of them.

I tried to watch the first Diana Rigg season of THE AVENGERS on PRIME
overnight, but their menu system is still horked.

I got THE MIDDLEMAN in HD on the PRIME, which I’m going to watch some of
today.

It's amazing what the CGI has done to make Halle Berry look so young!! ;p

Stargate: SG-1 S5E14 '48 Hours'
"When SG-1 returns from planet P3X116 under fire, only three of them
make it back to SGC safely: O'Neill, Carter and Jackson. Teal'c entered
the gate but it was destroyed before completing the trip and the signal
was lost. Carter believes that Teal'c's "signature" is still in the
gate's buffer but she's not sure how to retrieve him. Meanwhile, Jackson
and Major Paul Davis head to Moscow to negotiate an agreement with the
Russians to use their gate for SGC activities. Col. Frank Simmons
informs General Hammond that they have only 48 hours to retrieve Teal'c
and introduces the brilliant but arrogant Dr. Rodney McKay to help Sam
with the problem. For his part, O'Neill turns to a new ally for
information after Simmons tries to blackmail Hammond."

Colonel Harry Maybourne: If you need me, I'm at the Accent Inn checked
in under the name of Cassidy.
Colonel Jack O'Neill: David or Shaun?
Colonel Harry Maybourne: Butch.

Dr. Rodney McKay: I wish I didn't find you so attractive. I've always
had a real weakness for dumb blondes.
Major Samantha Carter: Go suck a lemon.
Dr. Rodney McKay: Very sexy. Very, very sexy.

A Continuity goof: Major omission (later rectified) with a series-wide
key artifact: one DHD is "lost" in overall series development since
Russians now apparently have the only DHD on the planet, taken from
Germans back after WW2 as mentioned in Stargate SG-1: Watergate and
therefore being the original DHD from Gyza's stargate recovered by the
Russians from the bottom of the ocean after the events in Stargate SG-1:
Nemesis while SGC after that runs the stargate from Antarctica
discovered in Stargate SG-1: Solitudes and they should still have the
corresponding DHD as well since it was obviously taken back from the
unofficial NID team in Stargate SG-1: Touchstone along with the second
stargate. But that DHD is missing from the plot line without any
explanations. However, a posterior explanation is given much later in
Stargate SG-1: Frozen that this DHD died shortly afterward in Area 51
while studying, since it was apparently the oldest DHD in the galaxy.

Trivia: This episode marks the first appearance of Dr. Rodney McKay
(David Hewlett) on Stargate SG-1 (1997). He would later become a regular
character on the spin-off series Stargate: Atlantis (2004).
It is also the final appearance of Peter Wingfield as Tanith. He's best
known for playing Methos in the 'Highlander' TV series. Teal'c killed
Methos!

A personal observation, keeping the Stargate Program a "secret" has
become a lot like keeping the "fact" that the Apollo program was a fake
a secret. WAY too many people know about it for it to remain a secret.
I get why shows want to keep these kinds of things a "secret from the
public" but just a few times I'd like to see shows where it _does_
become public knowledge.

The commentary is by the director and DP. More technical about
shooting, especially lighting, with lots of long pauses.

---------------------

Stargate: SG-1 S5E15 'Summit'
"Ren'al of the Tok'ra arrives at SGC to seek their assistance in a
strike against the Goa'uld, whose leaders are to hold a summit in an
attempt to overcome their differences. It provides the Tok'ra a rare
opportunity to strike at the entire Goa'uld leadership. Security will be
very tight but each system Lord will be allowed to bring with them one
human slave and Jackson agrees to participate as Yu-huang Shang Ti's
personal servant. The plan is that once there, he would release a poison
gas to kill the Goa'uld symbionts. The Goa'uld lords have to deal with a
new unseen foe. While Daniel is at the summit, the Tok'ra base comes
under attack."

Colonel Jack O'Neill: It's always suicide-mission this, save-the-planet
that. No one ever just stops by to say 'hi' anymore.

Ren'al: The deaths of Chronos and Apophis created a power vacuum that
the remaining System Lords have been trying to exploit. Over the past
several months they have suffered heavy losses and expended an enormous
amount of resources fighting amongst themselves.
Colonel Jack O'Neill: Let the good times roll.
Ren'al: Unfortunately the good times may be coming to an end. They've
declared a truce and now it looks as if they are going to have a meeting
to discuss the establishment of a new order.
General Hammond: So you want to stop them.
Ren'al: Quite the opposite actually. We want them to meet. It will
give us the rare opportunity to strike against all of them at once.
Major Samantha Carter: You're talking about taking out the entire
Gou'ald leadership?
Ren'al: We are.
Colonel Jack O'Neill [With a smile on his face.]: Welcome to the Dark Side.
(RDA delivered that line perfectly and it made me crack up.)

Jacob Carter/Selmak: How's it going?
Dr. Daniel Jackson: Oh, swell. It's kinda like Goa'uld Mardi Gras here.

Colonel Jack O'Neill: You know, we really should come up with a new
strategy. One that does *not* include us dying.

Major Samantha Carter: Lieutenant Elliot. Finally got your first assignment.
Lieutenant Elliot: Yes ma'am. Be nice to see a little action for a change.
Colonel Jack O'Neill: It's just your basic off world orientation,
Lieutenant. There is no action.
Lieutenant Elliot: Maybe not sir, but I am looking forward to meeting
the Tok'ra.
Colonel Jack O'Neill: You'll get over it.
(Lieutenant Elliot was the senior trainee in 'Proving Ground')

Trivia: This episode marks the first appearance of Ba'al (Cliff Simon)
on the series. He would ultimately become the longest-running villain in
"Stargate" history.
The first time that Anubis is mentioned by name.

Commentary: Martin Wood (director), a co-writer and, guess who! That's
right! James Tichenor. With a writer there is discussion about how the
story evolved as well as the usual "how we lighted these scenes" that
takes up a lot of time in almost all the commentaries.

My favorite episode is still "An Exercise in Fatality". Gretchen
Corbett! I believe she can still provide cheesecake. But Columbo truly
despised the Robert Conrad character 'cuz he made out-of-shape Columbo
chase him. It's just a great episode. The other one that's really good
is "Any Port in a Storm" 'cuz Donald Pleasence simply confessed, faced
with his secretary attempting to extort him into marrying her. He
prefered prison!

One of the Patrick McGoohan episodes was top notch; I didn't like the
one in which he had a vision impairment as much. The Leonard Nimoy
episode was much too obvious.

I didn't care for the revived Columbo during the '90s writers' strike.
One of them was actually adapted from an Ed McBain 87th Precinct novel.
Peter Falk was fine in the episode but it shouldn't have been done as an
episode of Columbo.

The B&W season was superior to the color season.

That’s one of the few I’ve seen and yes it was great.

I have seen a few of the Patrick McGoohan episodes. He’s always good, and
of course, directs them as well. I’ve never seen the Leonard Nimoy episode.
I have seen the Shatner episode where he had a newfangled video recorder
that nobody had ever heard of.

I’m pretty sure that’s what all of these were.

One of them had Robert Culp. I’ve seen some of those. (although not this
one) and I think he usually directs them as well, and he’s really good. In
this one he actually wasn’t the villain!

Several of these felt that way. Of course, after 10 years of watching
Columbo, regular viewers, might have been happy for a change of pace.

As is almost any TV show that exists in both formats.

One weird exception is WAGON TRAIN, which went to not only color but 90
minutes in it’s second to last season and then went back to black and white
and 60 minutes for its final season. I think it’s alone in that, and, what
the hell?

Hammond swears that was really an accident!

The onscreen explanation is that one of the alternate realities they
visited, they had gone public with the Stargate, and wackiness had ensued.

Yes, they did kill off one reporter in one episode. But the number of
people involved in the Stargate Program in various ways has to be in the
tens of thousands now if not over a hundred thousand. And then we get
to start counting the Russians.... *eyeroll* At some point it really
does become impossible to completely hide a program because it is simply
too big.

I'm getting a little tired of them but there are enough with some
interesting tidbits that I'm still watching them. As much as I rag on
Tichenor for being in so many of them he actually does try to ask the
other commentators about things that the audience might be interested
in. I suspect that is why he is in so many of them.

Around 1971, ABC was experimenting with 90-min series that would be
scheduled one after the other to fill the then-new three-hour primetime
schedule. ABC thought that viewers would be more reluctant to switch
channels at :30, when the other nets would be in the middle of a show.
ABC turned out to be wrong about that. Worse, the 90-min series proved
to be hard to syndicate, since no one wanted 90-min-long reruns.
