OK, this is a new one to me:

Tonight, went to "Class of '09" to watch the new episode off my Apple TV app:

Hulu Originals logo plays the usual sound/sting.
Then episode starts - no sound.

I check the earlier episodes of "Class of '09" - same thing happens:
Hulu logo has sound/sting, no sound at all in the episodes themselves.

Then I check other things on Hulu. "Single Drunk Female": no sound.
"The Rookie": no sound. A movie: no sound.

However, oddly, I check "General Hospital" - *that* has sound. Also get
sound from an ESPN+ event I checked.

So, this seems pretty random - many (most?) things I check on Hulu now
play with no sound. But a few things still play with sound.

No fixes seem to work: logging out/logging in again, reloading the app,
powering down the Apple TV box - none of these fix the problem.

Best part? This is apparently a (known) bug that people have been
encountering since 2019 on both AppleTV and Roku!! (You probably won't
be able to read this...):

Checked the iPhone - no problems with the app there: plays with sound.
Checked web browser access - no problems there: plays with sound.

So this just affects the Apple TV Hulu app.

No idea what to do here. I would say if it doesn't clear up on its own,
it renders Hulu pretty useless to me (can only get 4k from Apple TV
app...). I may end up cancelling (which will take out Disney+ and ESPN+
too) if this "no sound" bug continues.

You wouldn't see it - it's not a system-wide thing: it's an app bug. So
unless you have the Apple TV or Roku apps, you won't see it, and even
with them it seems to be a random bug that most people won't see most
of the time.

Update: Still no sound from the affected shows/movies, now 12 hours later.

At this point, I have to hope that the next Hulu app update "fixes" the
problem.

Otherwise, my Apple TV Hulu app is near useless now...

I can even AirPlay Huly content from my iPad (or my laptom).

The issue is, if I do that, I am sacrificing any 4k content (I'm pretty sure).

Which shouldn't be necessary if the damn app just worked properly!

I have determined that this is 100% an issue with the app (Apple TV Hulu app).

First, it looks like it is only affecting shows/movies with Dolby 5.1.
(One thing not tagged with Dolby 5.1 wouldn't play sound, but I think
it was in Dolby 5.1, and they just forgot to tag it.)

The stuff that will play - e.g. "General Hospital", older shows like
"CSI", are not tagged with Dolby 5.1.

Second, I *can* get sound out of some of the Dolby 5.1 programming!:

I go into a show and play it, and get the "play" bar to appear. Above
the "play" bar, there are two button icons - a "bubble one" (for
subtitles) and a round "sound" icon (for sound options) stuff. In the
"sound" options, you have "Audio Range" ("Full Dynamic Range" and
"Reduce Loud Sounds") - this does nothing. But under "Audio Track",
there is "English" and "English AD". "English" is what it's set to, and
- no sound. But swtich to "English AD" (short for "English with Audio
Descriptions" - it's for the hearing impaired), and *voila*!! - I have
sound again!! But with an annoying running audio commentary in the
foreground: stuff like "John Nolan gets down on the ground with this
hands behind his head.")

Shows with Dolby 5.1 that don't have "English AD" option - no
possibility of sound.

And I can't find any options to, say, turn off Dolby 5.1 on Hulu.

My only hope is that the next version upgrade of the Hulu app "resets"
this or something, and I get sound back.

TV* box itself - I switch from "TV Speakers" to my "HomePod": viola! I
have sound again, even in the regular "English" Audio Track.

But I switch back to my "TV Speakers" as "Sound Output" for the Apple
TV box - and I'm back to no audio from the regular "English" Audio
Track with Dolby 5.1.

So, this appears to be some kind of conflict between the Hulu app and
my TV soundbar/speakers (specifically my soundbar, most likely, which
LG just "upgraded" to what it calls "Wow Orchestra" (combined
soundbar+TV speakers) which is likely the real issue).

When I switch to just "TV speakers" as output, I also have sound from
Hulu again. But when I try the soundbar(+ TV speakers) together, I get
no sound from Hulu for anything that is 5.1 Dolby. (Could be an
HDMI(ARC) issue?...)

I'm hoping the next update to the soundbar actually solves this problem.

I did try that earlier - no effect.

And the issue is definitely the LG soundbar vs. Hulu - whether by
itself, or soundbar+TV speakers = no sound. Anything else, incl. TV
speakers by themselves = sound.

And anything besides Hulu seems fine with soundbar+TV speakers.

Hulu definitely seems to have a lot of issues (esp. with Apple stuff) -
as I said at the beginning, people have been reporting issues like this
going back to at least 2019. Certainly seems like a software bug on
Hulu's end.

OK, I've tested further - issue is definitely the LG soundbar and Dolby
5.1. It's not just Hulu.

It's weird - non-5.1 works fine. Even Dolby Atmos (e.g. Ant-Man 3, in
Dolby Atmos, plays fine). But anything on any streamer that's in Dolby
5.1, and I have to feed it just through the TV speakers only or I get
no Audio.

Really hope LG figures this out soon, and sends out an software update.
It's going to be annoying feeding nearly everything from the streamers
through just my TV speaker.

I'm sure LG has a solution. Just buy a new sound bar and everything
will be fine.. Until that one breaks and you need to buy a new sound
bar.

I have had very similar issues myself. "HDMI(ARC) issues" are legendary
as well as switching between TV and external speakers. Here are some
trouble shooting options:

1. Check and update your firmware! Make sure your TV, app, and receiver
are all using the latest firmware.

2. If you are using external speakers check to see if the sound will
come through your TV speakers. If you are getting sound through your TV
speakers, then my guess is the problem relates to the HDMI/ARC issue.
That's not to let the app off the hook, but there may be an issue with
the switching.

3. If you are accessing the show through the app on your TV, see if you
can access it though your blu-ray player or a dedicated streaming device
instead. As I recall, 99% of the issues I used to have with this was
accessing the streamer through my TV and trying to output the sound from
my TV to my receiver. That caused lots of audio issues that sound (no
pun intended) very similar to what you are experiencing. I think I got
them to go away when I stopped using the TV app.

4. I *know* it is frustrating to have to use a firestick or Roku when
the app is built directly into the TV, but if you are using external
speakers that may be the way to go to avoid these types of issues.

5. This one is harder to articulate, but I again I went through the same
thing and through trial and error I noticed the problems, which usually
were with Netflix (but not exclusively) related to if the show had Dolby
Atmos or not. And if it had Dolby Vision or not. I found sometimes I
could get the show to play in Dolby Vision, but not Atmos, or Atmos but
not Dolby Vision. You have to go in and tweak the settings to ensure
compatibility. There are far too many possible combinations for me to
try and narrow anything down for you. But for example, when when I
upgraded to my projected I noticed some compatibility issues where the
projector cannot do Dolby Vision. Since the TV can do Dolby Vision and
receiver is connected to both the TV and the projector at the same time,
I had to go into the receiver settings and turn off the output to the TV
in order for the projector to properly play movies encoded with Dolby
Vision (the same thing happens but worse with 3D). So you may have a
compatibility issue where one device is connected to something that
can't handle the Dolby Atmos or Vision and it has to be turned off in
the settings somewhere to prevent the conflict.

I finally found a "fix":

It turns out the problem was the Apple TV – under Video and Audio ->
Audio Format I had to select 'Change Format' to "On" which creates 'New
Format – Dolby Digital 5.1' – with this, I get sound from the streaming
apps like Hulu and Netflix again.
The problem with this is that it disables Dolby Atmos. So now every
time I want Atmos sound from the Apple TV box, I will have to go back
into 'Audio Format' and turn 'Change Format' back to "Off" to make
Dolby Atmos "Available" again.
I still don't understand why this wasn't an issue until recently,
because I didn't need to do this until a week or so ago.
And I'm still not sure if the problem was an Apple TV OS update, or the
LG WOW Orchestra update, though now I am thinking the problem may have
been the most recent Apple iOS update on the Apple TV box.
