Dude I once saw a line of pricey houses situated on a cliff that was
obviously going to crumble sometime in the next 40 years.

Once? It seems like we get posts of those sorts of homes falling into
the water every couple of years. Admittedly the people likely can
afford it and had some pricey insurance on the home. Still it has to
hurt to lose a home and all the possessions inside.

Hell, people are buying apartments in SF's "Millenium Tower".

I don't know anything about that but do know my wife collected 200
year old broken china from the remains of a house that during the last
50 years went from being on top of a cliff to at the bottom of a
cliff. (This was on the Jurassic coast near Dorchester, England)

Yikes. It reads like the script for Irwin Allen movie.

So it doesn’t have a 13th floor because there are a lot of really stupid
people that won’t live on the 13th floor and it doesn’t have a 44th floor
because there are a lot of stupid Asian people who won’t live in a building
with a 44th floor.

Does anybody else think maybe we should build buildings with two 13th
floors and two 44th floors so those stupid people won’t live in them?

Some elevator control panels substitute F for 4 and simply skip 13 and
14 so they read 11, 12, 15, 16. Skipping 13 has been routine for U.S.
elevators since elevators were invented, so I'm not pointing any
fingers. IIRC the Korean word for "four" is very similar to the one
for "death," which is the reason for all the skipping.

I think that's a great idea, and I'm not kidding.

Allegedly the builders figure the selling price of units on these
floors is about 5-10% below units on the 12th or 14th floors.

When I was a teenager we had a house with the number 1340 - the new
owners spent about $10000 petitioning the local council to change the
street number to 1338 and figure they gained $30-40k on the selling
price of the house (when they eventually sold). So said the assessment
the year after they did it in what was at the time a rather flat
market.

I've even seen buildings without a 13th floor in Hong Kong in an
industrial neighborhood with virtually no non-Chinese companies.
(Admittedly I was getting in their elevator - not going to the 14th
floor)

Which I've never understood, because a building whose elevator doesn't
have a button for 13 still has a 13th floor. Giving it a different name
doesn't mean the floor doesn't exist. It's still the 13th floor from the
bottom even if you call it 14.

What kind of bad luck is so stupid it would fall for such a transparent
trick to evade it?

OK, that’s two!

I’m trying to decide if we should put them on top of each other or scatter
them across the elevator control panel.

The Trump Tower skips IIRC 10 stories in the numbering, because the higher
floor numbers sell for more.

A couple years ago we had a registered sex offender move into the
neighborhood across the street and maybe 10 houses to the south. Close
enough that they had to notify us.

I noticed a few months ago that his street number is gone. Nobody knows
what happened. I can speculate, but it would be wild, baseless speculation.
Which usually doesn’t stop me.

When I was a teenager Mad magazine used to include stickers, such as a
bumper sticker that simply read BUMPER STICKER.

They had one that said something like “warning to occupants of the 14th
floor. You’ve really been on the 13th floor all along. Lots of luck!“

I put it on the elevator call panel on the 14th floor where I worked (on
11). I asked permission first from the high muckety-muck on the 17th floor,
who I knew hated the lack of the 13th floor in his building. He thought it
was funny. :-)

Back when there was a Mad Magazine and... their "annuals" (which seemed
to come out much more often than once/year) and their other specials
would have adhesive stickers in them.

One that I recall was (something like):
"hey, all you people living here on the 14th floor.
You're really on the 13th!!"

Much of the time they didn't. The houses started out far away from the
cliff edge but over time the cliff keeps getting closer and closer as
pieces break away.

That's relatively far in the future, considering these "global warming"
