Am I the only one who thinks that calling it “poisonous erucic acid oil”

I don't think anyone's charging that. They simply don't like the word
"rape" in the name of their product, which consumers have to be
persuaded to buy.

Rapeseed oil. There's a whole thread and everything.

Only someone in marketing needed a survey to tell him that "rape" has
negative connotations, but it sure would have been possible to explain
to someone that "rape" in this case came from the word for "turnip".

But the main negative connotation is that rapeseed oil was known for
CENTURIES to be unfit for human consumption. Of course you'd market it
for human consumption under a new word.

You can’t talk sense to the people that think “black holes“ are racist and
sexist or “history“ is white male supremacy or are pissed off about the
Niger river.

OTOH if you have to keep explaining that the name of your product
doesn't have anything to do with assaulting women, it's time to pick a
new name.

AYDS diet candy held on to its name past all reason. With sales down
by half, in 1988 they made a small name change, to Diet Ayd Candy Bar,
but of course that was too little and too late.

Brand names are supposed to help sell the product, not hinder sales.

No. You made that assumption that somehow there are people so
unaware that two different unrelated words may exist that are spelled
and pronounced the same way, You made the assumption that somehow
someone would believe the oil is associated with rape.

In the movie Lorenzo's Oil, "rapeseed oil" is stated in dialogue numerous
times once they heard the theory on how the disease might be treated
and looked for someone to manufacture it. There are no lines of dialogue
explaining that it's nothing to do with rape.

The human-grade oil was marketed under a new name BECAUSE IT'S NOT
POISONOUS like rapeseed oil, not because of rape.

Or get some smarter women. Maybe they were hoping all the women that
refused to use their product would be so fat no one would breed with them,
and that overall the species would improve.

Ian apparently wrote his Wikipedia article about AYDS as a joke and hasn’t
been busted yet.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ayds?wprov=sfti1

It shows a 1952 ad featuring actress Hedley LaMarr, perhaps best known for
her legal conflicts with territorial attorney general (under Governor
William J Le Petomane) Hedy LaMarr and her use of his name.

The article claims that in the mid-1980s sales went up because of
association with the disease and that
“Early in 1986, another executive of the manufacturer was quoted, "The
product has been around for 45 years. Let the disease change its name."”
echoing what Governor Lepetomane had said some 80 years earlier: “What the
hell are you worried about? This is 1874. You'll be able to sue *her*.”

Actually when US astronomers started using the term 'black hole' the
Russian astronomers were outraged because the literal translation of
"black hole" was the Russian word that is their counterpart to the
C-bomb (e.g. a rude word for female genitalia in English)

Nothing to do with racism at all - if anything worse.

It's unreasonable in that they took an oil that's potentially bad for
you and changed the name in an Orwellian fashion to pretend it's the
"healthy cooking oil." For further enlightenment see the Who song
"Won't Get Fooled Again."

So what’s this ignorant assholes excuse?

https://www.unz.com/mmalkin/dallas-county-official-black-hole-is-racist/

There are all sorts of examples of it.

https://www.city-journal.org/article/down-a-black-hole

https://www.space.com/nasa-stops-racist-nicknames-cosmic-objects.html

Here’s an asshole, his entire career was handed to him via affirmative
action and yet he’s complaining about bad treatment.

Dark matter is racist, too.

So is angel food cake. Not to mention devil’s food cake.

"NASA's first Commercial Crew Program astronauts, a group of nine people, six
of whom are white men."

The horror! How dare NASA employ white men as astronauts?!? Don't they know
it's official government policy now to racially discriminate against whites?

Well, at least they're no longer saying NASA's top priority is to make Muslims
feel better about themselves, the way they were during the Obama
administration.

Do we know he’s not Muslim? Obama appointed him.

He was turned down for the Naval Academy until he complained to enough
people and actually did get in based on his skin color.

He was recruited to NASA by Nichelle Nichols herself because they needed
more black astronauts.

He said Obama tasked him "to reach out to the Muslim world ... to help them
feel good about their historic contribution to science... and math and
engineering".

The White House called him a liar.

"That was not his task, and that's not the task of NASA".

After Trump booted him his first day in office, he went to work for the
Saudis.

Jesus, Biden booted the Trump admin on his first day in office, but his new
guy only lasted four months!

He claims to be a practicing Christian. I I RC, so does Obama.

No. I "made the assumption" that buyers would be unpleasantly
distracted by the product name. That's because they are. I didn't,
and don't, hold that buyers will associate the fruit with the act of
rape.

The growers and marketers have to sell this stuff. What people
"should" do doesn't matter to them at all.

How was "rape" a distraction, but "poisonous" wasn't? You have
repeatedly done the quote editing nonsense. You have NOT addressed
the key issue, that there was a need to have two different names for a
product that came in industrial varieties and human food grade
varieties.

Because it wasn't called "poisonous-seed oil"? ...so that every tine
you ordered it, you had to say "poisonous"?
