A friend is sending me his old iPad. I have no idea if it will have any
effect on USENET. I also assume the mailman will steal it or toss it in the
desert like my ballots and census forms. I checked my “informed delivery”
from the USPS for the week and marked everything they sent me a picture of,
and asked me if I got it as “not received”

There are lots of Autotext and Autoformating you have to go through in
Word. Autotext looks for certain patterns and will substitute non-ASCII
characters by default. For instance, the Unicode points of ellipsis get
substituted for three dots, even if the writer is using a suspension
point. Note that in ASCII, a suspension point is "... " versus points of
ellipsis ". . . ", trailing spaces for both. Word makes so many bad
assumptions I have to turn all of it off entirely.

I marked an example of an improper substitution of the Unicode character
above.

But Word can output plain text if you tell it to. That doesn't force the
output to be ASCII as some of the default Autotext and Autoformatting
features override it, aargh. However, the one thing Word does that's
useful in outputting plain text is changing all the line boundaries to
CRLF. Open a purported plain text document in Notepad, which has no
features, which doesn't know what to do with a line boundary that's New
Line/Line Feed only. With CRLF, lines break as expected.

>I think the main issue with her posts are the smart quotes/apostrophes.

Plus copy-n-paste changes things as well because there's no way
to tell it what character set to use.

I try to eyeball quotes of anim's articles in followup, then manually
substituted ASCII characters. It's extra work. Sometimes I forget to
check Subject. A Friend is using a client that doesn't translate and
changes the encoded character, and sometimes, BTR1701 uses a client that
decodes the character on Subject but then posts with the unencoded
non-ASCII character, which is nonstandard.

Then lots of people using the Google Groups [spit] client include
characters that must never be used outside typesetting, like
non-breaking spaces. It's easy to miss those given that, well,
whitespace characters don't display unless I force the issue with a
deliberate translation mismatch in the terminal emulation's setting.

I really try to post my followups as plain text ASCII but I miss a hell
of a lot of this. In this followup, I had to manually add MIME headers
'cuz the single use of the retained UTF-8 character in the quote of anim
makes this necessary.

Just assume it's wrong and go in and backspace over the apostrophe and
type in a new one. That should make it right.
