The Contenders

Ice glazed, the mariners voyage
is scattered bow to stern,
a memorial erected
into nature's majestic frozen;
caught, as the filled hull's fish
taste freedom again through cracks
in splintered timber,
and the captains last pipe,
smokes still at the helm,
clutched in a frozen hand.

Hearty men in small wood,
no match for conquer today,
for the seas, a seasoned fighter,
will not relinquish the crown
as gulls and seal's give witness.

The last logs page drifts out
into the white caps,
"Home in a fortnight"
a final entry in blurred ink,
not knowing home would come sooner.

And new contenders, soon set out
from distant berth's,
trying to grab the crown
from the champion sea.

A worthy fight.

Frosty
