That's a disturbing story... until one takes into account the fact that Pick didn't converted to Judaism until he was well into his 20s.

The "document" was not verified by Dr. Schwimmer. Dr. Schwimmer appeared bemused by the situation and said that he supposed it looked official. Such a "verification" would not hold up in a court of law.

As to Pick's conversion:

1) In a published interview, Pick claimed to have self-converted to Judaism (ca. 1968, IIRC). There is no such thing as self-conversion.
2) Pick claimed to still be in contact with the Rabbi who'd performed his conversion -- but that Rabbi turned out to have been dead for approx. 20 years.
3) Said Rabbi represented some ersatz branch of New Age Judaism which no one in the Orthodox community would recognize.

So, even if Pick were telling the truth (and Pick was caught in more lies than Pinocchio), his "conversion" would have been discounted by the Orthodox Jewish community, and by most Conservative Jews as well.

How do you think he's verifying it, Donkey?

Is he checking the names and affiliations of the Rabbis and making sure that the conversion was halachal?

Unless he recognizes the Rabbis names and is familiar with their conversion procedures, he could not possibly verify it by reading over it in a bar.

To verify it, he would need to look up the Rabbis, confirm their affiliation with a recognized Orthodox temple (or a Conservative temple conducting a conversion by halachal, Orthodox standards).

We know for a fact that the Rabbi Pick claimed performed the conversion was not recognized by Orthodox or Conservative Rabbis.

Pick's conversion would not have been recognized by Orthodox or Conservative Jews (and many Reform Jews as well).

Pick was, a fake Jew.

He was a fake Jew because the Rabbi performing his conversion was affiliated with some ersatz, New Age "Reform" branch that is not recognized by the Jewish community.

He was a fake Jew because he didn't keep Shabbos.

He was a fake Jew because he spoke Lashon Hara (made negative statements about others).

He was a fake Jew because he claimed to be in "contact" with his deceased wife through some sort of psychic connection, whereas the Jewish faith holds that the dead do not experience an "afterlife" until the Judgement Day.

He also lied (constantly), stole (two suitcases full of valuable horror movie memorabilia from Forrest Ackerman), supported incest and pedophilia, etc.

He was a nutty con man who "converted" as a means of getting an introduction to Bob Dylan... not because he understood or followed it.

One dead giveaway to his phony status was the fact that he prominently advertised his supposed Judaism in every post. He used his Judaism like a magician uses the occult -- it was all part of his act.
