I saw a very good documentary some years ago that discussed the
possibility of building a railway across the Atlantic Ocean, connecting
London and New York City. (The concept was actually inspired by a
science fiction novel, A Transatlantic Tunnel, Hurrah! by Harry
Harrison.) The engineers featured in the documentary declared that such
a railway COULD indeed be done using existing, proven technology.

Essentially, thousands of concrete sections would be fabricated on land,
with each fitting into the one before and then being sealed. The tunnel,
once completed, would use magnetic levitation to move the train. The
train would accelerate to the halfway point in the journey, then
decelerate to zero by the time it reached the end of the journey. At
it's fastest point, the train would be doing either 15,000 mph or kph (I
forget which). These stunning speeds would be possible because the
tunnel would be a vacuum (with pressurized air in the train so that
passengers and crew could breathe, just like in a commercial airliner).
The tunnel itself, would be 200-300 ft below the surface of the water so
as to be out of the way of ships. They even verified that the structure
would be solid enough to stay intact if hit by a stray submarine! The
entire journey from London to New York would take only ONE HOUR given
the immense speed of the train.

But don't look for this train to start operating any time soon. The
engineers also calculated the cost of building the line from London to
New York and the materials that would be needed. I don't remember the
final cost but I'm pretty sure it was either in the trillions or the
quadrillions. Also, project would need all the concrete and all the
steel produced on the ENTIRE PLANET for a full century to be possible.

This one mega-project would only provide a quick link between London and
New York so people going anywhere else would not be helped (unless part
of their journey involved going from New York through London or vice
versa). It was painfully obvious that other cheaper ways to travel
between two relatively distant points could be found.

Biden's notion of building a railway from (presumably) America across
the Pacific and the Indian Oceans would be inconceivably expensive and
MUCH MUCH MUCH more expensive than any number of other options.

The Marianas Trench isn’t near India, but Biden said he was building a
train from the Pacific all the way across the Indian Ocean. Unless he does
it way to the south, he’s going to cross the Marianas Trench, which is
pretty much on the border between the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean.

I don’t know what the hell your route would be. Start in the Pacific at the
Philippines just north of the equator so you touch the tip of India and
then end up in Africa? Why?
