It's not exactly a desirable solution given the population issue. I
just saw a report talking about the rate of students who are
graduating from high school is about to start to decline in 2025,
which will end up hurting college enrollment. All because there are
fewer kids being born now than a few decades ago. So unless someone is
truly a burden on society with no benefits to their continued
existence I can't see why anyone would even suggest suicide as an
answer.

The program was originally pitched as a painless way out for those
with terminal illnesses. It has continued as being advocated for those
helpless or otherwise incapicitated - and not just the terminally ill.

Ethically it's questionable - there are all sorts of people who don't
have the capacity to make such a decision and this goes WELL beyond
"do not resuscitate" orders or "no extraordinary measures"

What's particularly immoral is that when this first came forward in
Canada it was well covered in the media but with the various
extensions to it there has been little or no coverage except when some
doctor speaks to a live microphone in shall we say "surprising"
incidents like the Afghanistan vet who came to the clinic seeking
medications to deal with his anxiety due to PTSD and had a clinic
staffer give him a MAID (medical assistance in dying) prochure. I
emphasize - up to that point it was a perfectly normal visit to what
in US terms would be a VA clinic.
