I had never heard of this tv series, but the secondary public television
station was airing it. Three episodes, from 2014, BBC One.

This was adapted from the famous novel by Daphne du Maurier, adapted
into the adequate Hitchcock film in 1939. Well, Charles Laughton
insisted that Maureen O'Hara be cast, then Laughton brought O'Hara to
Hollywood to make The Hunchback of Notre Dame, then she made How Green
was My Valley (1941), and had a fantastic career in Hollywood.

The tv miniseries got complaints from viewers about sound problems or
mumbling actors. There's no pacing and no evidence of a plot.

I read du Murier's most famous novels as a kid and I just didn't
recognize it.

Also, it was shot in YORKSHIRE, which doesn't look like Cornwall, and
where's the moor?

Since I looked it up, I hadn't recalled how young du Maurier was when
she wrote her most famous novels. She started getting published in her
early 20s!

The cast wasn't bad.

Jessica Brown Findlay (Sybil from Downton Abbey) as Mary
Matthew McNulty as Jem
Sean Harris as Joss
Joanne Whalley as Patience

I turned on captions immediately. Then it wasn't moving along, and after
not too long I decided I didn't just dislike it, I hated it. I made it
about half way through the first episode.

Speaking of murdering children, the Met did Medea last fall. They've
never performed it! The copyright on the Greek myth hadn't yet expired,
or something.

My local public television station aired it Sunday morning.

For those of you who don't remember your Greek mythology, go re-watch
Jason and the Argonauts and the epic Ray Harryhausen stop-motion
animation! It's the backstory! To allow Jason to regain his throne and
to obtain the Golden Fleece, Medea has murdered for him, killing her own
brother!

Jason has been with Medea for years and they've had children together.
But the opera opens with Glauce preparing to marry Jason.

Medea doesn't show up till well into the opera. She wants revenge.
REVENGE! Once Medea shows up, the rest of the characters are mostly
background to advance the plot. Medea poisons Glauce; her bloody corpse is
seen near the beginning of the third act. Much of the rest of the third act
is Medea's solos contemplating murdering the children she had with Jason.
The posters and stills depicting this opera are always of mad, enraged
Medea covered in her children's blood holding the knife.

This is adapted from Euripides play (set centuries in the past); the
dialog was written colloequially and not poetically. The characters
aren't treated like myths but real people and there's nearly no magic in
the play, nor the opera.

Luigi Cherubini (1760-1842) sets himself up in Paris with sponsorship of
Marie Antoinette and the royal family. He survives the bloody French
Revolution; they don't. The opera premieres in 1797. The opera was
written in French. Typically, it's performed translated into Italian.

Maria Callas famously revivew the opera in 1953 but few true sopranos
had her singing range and it's difficult to perform. I listened to the
score and it's not clear to me which portions are out of the range of a
typical soprano.

This was performed by Verdi and Italian-opera specialist Sondra
Radvanovsky, so of course they used the Italian translation.

Quite frankly, I don't want to see the damn captions. I can tell what's
going on from the performance. It's a tragedy. She sacrificed for love.
She was betrayed. Her love was betrayed.

Radvanovsky did her final bow covered in blood. Even the children bowed
still covered in blood; well, they get murdered off stage. After the
rest of the company was acknowledged, she returned with the blood washed
off her arms. She knelt down to pick up a rose; I swear I thought she
was picking up the blade and was about to go after the deceased Glauce
once again.

Do you give Medea a boquet of roses?

In a nice touch, even the score covers in the orchestra pit were blood red.

Which opera? He's done guest conducting of operas at the Met but he's
not best known as an opera conductor.

You've whooshed me.

He's still alive and still working, just turned 87.

Good heavens, talk about a soap opera. Zubin and his first wife, a
Canadian soprano named Carmen (hahahahahaha). They had a son and
daughter. They divorced. Carmen married Zarin, Zubin's younger brother!

Were Zubin and Zarin at the New York Phil at the same time? Zarin was
its executive director, and Zubin conducted after leaving the L.A. Phil.

He's been married to Nancy Kovack since 1969.

You’re so close! Who did Nancy Kovack play in Jason and the Argonauts?

TV series? I remember it being a poorly colorized bad movie that used to play
in syndication way too often in the late 1980's.

Then he sleeps at night just fine.

1) He hasn't yet betrayed her by seeking a third marriage.

2) Medea doesn't want revenge REVENGE! till the sequel.

I was being too literal and missed your reference to what I'd written.
