Tonight It Will Be Different

What a terrible place to want to return to,
knowing what awaits. knowing, the cast of characters so well
without knowing them at all, yet I knock on the door
expecting, perhaps, a tip of the hat or humble greeting.

The driving force is obvious, the title with the word 'poetry' coxes entry
but you know the beating from the last attempt
still heals, the bruises turning an odd yellow.
but the chin is stuck out once again, for maybe there is a change,
maybe a cigar burning round table becons discussion,
but no as we wonder how battered wives go back again and again
to find the same fist, the same slur, the same burial
of thought

I tell myself, 'Not tonight'
while signing in.
