Road Kill

He finally made it,
his own telephone pole
memorial, complete
with plastic flowers
and smile photo inside
see through
cellophane.

No need to head over
to the graveyard,
you’ll drive by everyday
after the stop for coffee
and roll, lucky enough
if you catch the red light,
giving time
to stare and shake your head,
knowing it didn’t take long
before the road sweeper
kept it all nice and tidy --
blood, school papers and one shoe
gone before rush hour.
