Although the vast majority of maps have North at the top, it has not
always been this way. Several cultures have put East at the top and some
have put South at the top. This video explains the history and also
mentions why some contemporary maps don't follow this convention:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B14Gtm2Z_70 [10 minutes]

I always enjoy the Map Men videos, even their better-than-average ads.

They're good. There's also a webpage that shows world maps from
different perspectives. Unfortunately, I don't think I saved the link.

There’s a West Wing, where the murderous psychotic doctor from Star Trek
enterprise tries to convince CJ Craig that the map of the earth should be
upside down.

There are Godzilla movies that have the standard Mercator projection maps,
but with Japan in the center.

Johnny Harris discusses various maps and why we use them in various
episodes of his Youtube videos. Hell, most of his videos are about
various borders and why they exist.

How many international borders are the result of a temporary armistace
line that was going to be replaced with a negotiated border in a
negotiation that never actually occurred?

Pretty much all of them drawn as a result of war, I suppose.

I'll have to look later, but since the earth rotates along the north-south
axis, it makes sense to align it that way.

I'll have to watch it later, but since the earth rotates along the north-south
axis, it makes sense to align it that way.

On a related note, I saw an interesting interview with a Flat Earth loser who
put the north pole at the center and defined "south" as an direction towards
the edge of the map.

They should have asked him to go to the edge and take a picture to show the
rest of us.

He had an answer for that, but I don't recall exactly what it was now. I
think he said no one's allowed to go there or there's a wall that prevents us
from looking past the edge (hinting there might be more circlular flat Earths
out there).

We have planes and helicopters that can see over walls.

And who decides who can legally go to the edge of the earth? Who
enforces that? Why do we let them?

Australians would be from the land Up Over and I don't think they'd
cotton to that.
