In North Chicago, police responded to a shots fired call. Encountering
the man outside, he started firing at police but didn't hit anybody.
He's been convicted of attempted murder at trial in Waukegan (Lake
County courthouse, Illinois), and because the victims were cops, each
count carries a mandatory 40 to 100 year sentence.

Meanwhile, in northwest Indiana, nothing can stop a woman with epilepsy
from driving, despite striking and killing two pedestrians in separate
collisions. There's no evidence she had had a fit, causing either collision.

One case went to trial. She gunned her vehicle to 85 mph to beat a
yellow light, crossed the center line and median, hit two other
vehicles, then jackknifed and struck and killed the pedestrian.

She kept changing her story to police, much later claiming to have
passed out. The prosecutor argued that people who pass out don't make up
elaborate lies. She admitted in testimony that she didn't want to tell
police about her epilepsy as she'd have lost her license. Nevertheless,
it doesn't appear that epilepsy had anything to do with her actions.

Prosecution argued that it's criminally reckless conduct to drive
knowing one has a debilitating medical condition.

She wasn't charged with this as she'd been cleared by a doctor to drive
a month earlier and hadn't had a seizure in years.

NOT GUILTY

I have no idea how the jury didn't see her as a menace to society, but
they wouldn't have been told about the second collision.

She goes to trial on the second reckless homicide case in which she killed
a 70 year old man in December.
