Michael, I’m trying to give dance a chance a retrieving any shred of decency he has left here. And I know that you weren’t accusing him of being drunk all the time.
But if he could just take a step back and observe his own behavior towards the major part of the rest of the group here, he might change his tactics towards the us.
I really don’t think he wants to present himself as the formidable person that he’s had to become in order to be will’s friend.. I believe it’s his only line of the defense of will that he can muster. And it’s a shame.

I agree that he should try to mend bridges with his AAPC peers while he still has some faint hope of doing so.

According to his "ethical system" of "Tit for Tat," he should make friendly overtures (positive "Tats") in order to be treated as a friend in return. However, my numerous attempts to integrate George into the group have only resulted in convincing him to adopt a "reactive" stance wherein he simply doesn't launch any new attacks (but waits until he, or his Donkey, have been attacked and jumps at the chance to retaliate).

George need to adopt a *proactive* stance, and start interacting with other AAPC members in a friendly manner, thereby encouraging them to become friendly in return.

His current reactive stance only produces, at best, a temporary cease fire.

The same holds true for any AAPC members, like yourself, who would like have George become a viable member of the group (as opposed to merely aiding and abetting the trolls).

I disagree, however, that George's friendship with the Donkey is the basis of his failure to get along with the rest of us. IMO, George suffers from paranoia (with a resultant persecution complex) and having been at odds with various generations of AAPC members (for 15-20 years) has adopted a perpetual defensive position wherein one is seen as an adversary until proven otherwise. He and the Donkey have become bedfellows because the Donkey has been similarly under attack (for over 20 years). It's the old "any enemy of my enemy is my friend" stance.

Most of us are able to distinguish personal attacks against ourselves from attacks on one of our friends. We may defend our friend (or advise our friend to adapt his behavior), but we continue to treat those attacking him as *our* friends. George Dance is unable to do this.

I used to think that he felt he was defending the (intellectually) helpless (a combination of the "martyr complex" and the "MENSA Man's Burden"), but I no longer believe this to be so. Rather, his galloping paranoia has driven him to ally with the only people he believes that he can trust: those who are at odds with his perceived enemies.

Unfortunately, those who are perpetually opposed to the majority of any group's members are, by definition, trolls.

This creates a self-replicating scenario wherein he is forced to make enemies of those who were behaving neutrally toward him, but who have attacked the group's trolls. This, in turn, places him in the position of a troll, and generates direct attacks against him (thereby reinforcing his sense of paranoia).

One cannot reason with stupidity (our resident Donkey), nor can one reason with neuroses such as afflict Mr. Dance (our Canadian poet, not his father).. George needs to recognize his problems before he can take any steps toward alleviating them.

George Dance comes from and still resides in the world of politics, still resides in the world of parry and thrust in an attempt to 'win'. His debates never focus on what was said rather than his interpretation of what should have been said by the opposition.
