We don't set anything, though we do allow them by buying tickets or
watching the advertisements that provide the money to go to those
athletes/celebrities.

I figure that celebs are ultimately paid in accordance with what us
plain folks are willing to shell out for the privilege of "experiencing"
them. Athletes, too, one level removed.

Well yes, everything ultimately affects everything else, but a CEO's
salary, when set by a board of directors, is typically well-insulated
from the average consumer or stockholder -- whereas, e.g., Will Smith's
fee instantaneously took a bigger hit than he gave Chris Rock.
