Some of what she says isn't helpful, like the patient comes in with a
sore knee and the doctor prescribes a restrictive diet and no ongoing
support. Actually, the sore knee is absolutely a result of obesity. I
have an obese friend who tells me about his knee issues frequently.

The main argument is that doctors are untrained, and that's probably
true. They need to refer the patients to an actual specialist and a
program that can provide follow through.

some training. Eh.

Tell the patient EXACTLY what he needs to know WITHOUT shaming. That
would be a good strategy. Shaming them, which will hurt their feelings,
will probably be used as the excuse to eat more junk food.

That would seem to be an obvious solution. Given the number of obese
people in the USA every GP should be aware of how to properly discuss
the issue so that the patient is most likely to listen to the doctor.

Agreed. Shaming anyone of any age almost never works. Let them know
that their problems are likely caused by their weight and leave it to
them to do something about the issue or not.
