Quicksand

Your boot on my face,
pushing me down -- a mouthful
of mud, choking my plea
and you back off.

Can't lose me yet, I'm needed
and you lower a branch
just beyond my fingertips
as you smile at my attempt
to reach.

Finally, I climb up and back.

You watch me shower clean,
but again dragging me out into the cold air,
back into the bog and your boot.

"Please" I asked, "Push me completely under
allow me to sink into oblivion,
and breathless dark."

And the boot is placed on my neck, till the eyes
are sealed, throat clogged, unable to scream out;
"Don't stop, finish my misery."

And the branch is returned.

I reach out no longer,
sinking into the quiet
of goodbye.
