The poem attempts to capture the idea of Manifest Destiny as it appeared to Americans at the time: 1845. Unlike those who would censor or condemn history, I think it more important to understand history for what it was. Neither the pioneers nor the politicians saw themselves as genocidal land-grabbers, and in order to understand their motivations and actions, we need to understand their mindset at the time and the sort of noble, optimistic, even spiritual feelings it produced.

The Native Americans, buffalo, prairie dogs, sod and rocks were just things that needed to be cleared out. If you think of it in terms of Europe (which is just slightly larger than the U.S.), you can see how borders are artificial boundaries.

Since intentions are often seen as best by the beholders of deeds in the past, we cannot ignore or hide what was done, in case we do the same with our best intentions.
