“Years spent investigating the messy aftermaths of broken relationships, not to mention the toxic fallout of his and Charlotte’s many partings and the recent ugly scene with Madeline, had left Strike with few illusions about the depths to which spurned lovers might sink in their desperation to wound those who’d left them.”

“The Ink Black Heart” by Robert Galbraith (J.K. Rowling), p. 943, Hachette Book Group, First North American Edition, August 2022.

Yes, p. 943 (of >1000 pages!). We did finish reading the book. Of course we wouldn't wound any ex-lovers, but it occurred to us that the wisdom written above could be applied to a certain Donkey, who desperately wants people to believe that his loves were true and lasting, even beyond death. No one ever left him.

No one ever did walk out on the Donkey... at least not until they sobered up.
