Even if you didn't see Dave Chappelle's latest special, you might have heard about it in the news. People were outraged--but not because of the blatantly anti-Semitic jokes (if you don't know what we're talking about, Google it, or just watch it on Netflix while you still can). But his Space Jews routine invaded our imagination and refused to leave. Kind of ironic, no?

This is a wild story. I learned this past Juneteenth of a story, this is true. And it’s that there was a Black man who was in South Carolina during slavery who somehow got granted his freedom by his so-called master. And when his master granted him the freedom he also gave him a plot of land.. Now it turns out, this brother was brilliant. He had a good eye, good knack for farming. And he farmed this plot of land very successfully and made a lot of money, and this is where the story gets crazy. When he got all that money… this n*gga brought some slaves.

Have you ever heard this before? This is a true story. Not only was he a slave owner, he became a slave breeder. And employed tactics that were so cruel even White slave owners were like, “Yo, my man.”

He was a wild dude, but he did it just because that’s what successful people did at the time. He just wanted to be down, what a fuckin’ tragedy. How can a person that went through slavery perpetuate the same evil on a person that looks just like him. It’s mind blowing. And shockingly, they’re making a movie about him. Ironically… it is called Space Jews.

There were some 20,000 Blacks who themselves owned slaves at the
beginning of the Civil War. Historian Daniel Boorstin has written
extensively about this.

BTW the average number of slaves owned by households where slavery was
practiced was a fraction over 1, which indicates that almost all
slave-owning households held just one slave.

Dave Chappelle was making a comparison between the semitic residents of occupied Palestine and their semitic Israeli prison guards.

It was a metaphor by a Muslim stand-up comic.

written about the existence of black slaveowners.

The other little-known and often-disbelieved fact about slavery is
that slaves weren't all black; there were white slaves as well,
although they weren't very numerous as I understand it.

Kamala Harris claims her African heritage through her aunt IIRC, who was a
black Caribbean slave owner. There’s some weird school of thought that now
says anybody involved in the slave trade on either side as an owner or a
slave is automatically African. I guess all those pasty white Vikings and
they’re pasty white English slaves are all African now.

the people, claiming it makes her African-American also claim the story was

If memory serves, the first slave in America was a white man whose owner was
black.

If memory serves, a black person appeared on a genealogy show discovered
his ancestors were slave-holders and demanded they not show that part. Heh.

specified period?

Reason I ask is our records show my first male ancestor (at least with
my last name) was indentured for his first 5 years in America at which
time it was said his sea trip to America was paid off. To all intents
and purposes he was a slave for 5 years. (I'm not aware that those who
paid for their transportation to America were routinely raped however)

Obviously I'm well aware of the difference between what I've described
and the Old South's "peculiar institution". For instance you've likely
noticed I don't have my hand out for reparations or indeed any
acknowledgement at all of his former condition.

The "white slaves" Rhino is referring to were most likely the children
of female black slaves and white masters after a few generations. Its
part of the "one drop of Negro blood" definition used. By the 1850s and
60s runaway slave posters saying "Will try to pass themselves off as
white" were not uncommon.

Before 1850, at least twenty thousand white men traded a years-long
term of indentured servitude for a start in establishing their own
operation. They weren't the children of anybody in particular, and
they weren't mixed-race.

Which just because there was a Korean captured by US forces in
Normandy in 1944 (he was originally conscripted by the Japanese,
captured by the Russians in 1939, forced into the Red Army, then
captured in 1941 by the Germans before being shipped to Normandy - he
emigrated to the US and died at 90+ in Chicago) certainly doesn't mean
it happened in real life medieval times....

This is of course the difference between American antebellum slavery
and back in Roman times - the Romans weren't in the habit of boinking
around with their household slaves....they saved it for the temple

And it is generally true historically that 'slavery for life' was
mostly an American invention - it was common in Roman and Medieval
times for a slave to be (a) allowed to own money and (b) manumission
was often bought by these savings or a relative.

For the Romans it was not uncommon for manumission to be given in
return for a patron-client relationship often with the patron setting
them up in business to allow them to work for a living. Other than for
gladiator slaves it was unusual for Roman slaves to die in slavery.
