I wonder if this applies to the Thundergirls, too? Tina Belcher will be

But actually they are pronounced slightly differently so there's never
any confusion.

Ka-NA-ta is the pronunciation of the suburb
CA-na-da is the (official) pronunciation of the country

Bonus factoid: "Kanata" is said to be the native word for "the village"
and one theory is that this is how our country got its name. According
to this theory, European explorers asked the local Indians wherever
they landed what this place (meaning the country) was called but the
Indians thought they were asking about the village they were in and
taught them the local word for "village"; the Europeans thought they'd
just learned the name of the country and eventually Canada became the
name they used for the whole country.

(Another possible explanation is based on the fact that "ca nada" is the
Portuguese phrase meaning "nothing there". Since Portuguese
fishermen were fishing off the coast of northern North America even
before Columbus sailed west and no doubt landed at one point or another,
this somehow became the name of the country. After all, Europeans
looking for cities and civilizations didn't find any in our part of the
world, just Indians and Innuit in the Far North, so they could well have
despaired of finding anything but raw resources like fish, furs,
minerals, etc. in our part of the world. But I've never seen any
government historian advance this explanation, which is unsurprising.
After all, what government would want its country known as "nothing
there"? The PR would be absolutely horrible.)

Yes, I believe Nortel was in Kanata [but I'm wrong: Wikipedia says they
were in Nepean which is very close to Kanata] and was, for a time, a
highly desireable place to work. (I remember friends who had work terms
there and they raved about it.)

I never followed the story of what drove them out of business though.
You may well be right about it being IP theft by the CCP/PLA. For
what it's worth, Wikipedia has a rather different explanation, none
of which seems to be attributable to the CCP/PLA.

For sure but Nortel was considered one of Canada's "shining stars of
industry" before Chinese industrial espionage (most of which was
turned over to Huawei) put them out of business.

While Justin would never violate the Canadian constitution (though he
has no trouble stretching it as it suits him) I still think the two
Michaels would have been released at least a year earlier if Beijing
learned that Mme. Meng were being kept under the same prison
conditions those two were kept in instead of being allowed to do"house
arrest" with an electronic monitoring device around her ankle while
living in a $12 million mansion during her "imprisonment".

THAT was a national disgrace.

(Though I did very much enjoy the CBC interview with the brother in
law of one of the Michaels who after his release from Chinese
captivity who took him to the barber, introduced him as Michael but no
surname - and noted the amazement on the barber's face when he
realized just whose hair he was cutting and WHY he had such a lousy
haircut.
