Buzz Me In

It was a forty-story high rise,
a brick-and-mortar people colony,
that brought thought to those inside --
those making love on fourteen
or the abused on twelve,
perhaps an overdone pork chop
on twenty two.

It's all there: attitude,
comprehension or lack of,
foolish bravado, lust --
an elevated world,
so different the occupants,
odd names and heritage,
but so alike, sliding that rent
under the door
marked management.

Not too many visits I suppose,
from one to another,
all sealed away in solitude
with the occasional baby cry
or crack of gunfire
from too loud gangster flicks
illuminating a den
or living room.

I'm sure that graffiti peace sign
sits next to 'fuck you'
in the laundry room --
so different we all are
and yet so very much alike.

It sparkles at night,
that high rise on the horizon --
lights flicker on and off
revealing but never quite
revealing all there is to know.
