Did you know that a Canadian Supreme Court justice had an important
role in devising a solution to the problem of displaced Jews after WW
II and contributed to the foundation of Israel?

https://nationalpost.com/news/canada/the-unlikely-canadian-who-helped-create-the-state-of-israel

Despite being a Canadian and a history buff, the name Ivan Rand had
never come to my attention until today. I had no idea Canadians had any
role in the events that led to the establishment of Israel.

He sounds fascinating, especially his recognition of liberty for all in
Canadian law, changing his own mind from earlier in life.

I didn't know, either, but I Googled it. That usually works.

I knew about Rand and his formula concerning labor relations in Canada
but hadn't heard about his Israeli connection until I read the
National Post story which was reprinted in the Vancouver Sun on
Saturday.

No question he was one of Canada's greatest jurists.

For the record the "Rand Formula" was a doctrine that provided a third
option to labor relations (besides open shop - no union membership
required - and closed shop - where ONLY union members could be hired)
in Canada in that while union dues would be mandatory, union
membership was not. The non-member had no rights to a say in the union
- he just had to pay - but that brought labor peace for a LONG time in
Canada.

The US has a similar "third" option in many States and occupations
called "agency shop". The worker still pays dues under the theory
theyre still getting the benefits of better contracts from the
collective bargaining, etc.

I'd heard of the Rand Formula but would have struggled to give details
of what it was. I'd never heard of his connection to pre-independence
Israel either.

Neither did I realize that we only got a Supreme Court
in the 1940s, although I knew that the British were the ultimate court
of appeal for all matters Canadian until long after Confederation. But
I thought all of that ended in either 1927 or 1931 - I can't remember
which - when we took that back from the Brits. I assumed the Supreme
Court was established to coincide with that but apparently we did
without one for at least a decade. It might be interesting to know more
about that but I've got bigger fish to fry this week/month so I'll put
it on my To Do list....

Glad to be of service <grin> As for Israel I had never heard of Judge
Rand's involvement there either until the news story. (Which was not
of course actually news since it concerned matters from 1947-48 -
still I was glad they published it since it DOES give context to the
present situation!)

I'm pretty sure the Supreme Court of Canada was established well
before 1931 (which for non-Canadians, 1931 was a pivotal year for
Canada and Australia since the British Statute of Westminster made
them fully independent rather than partially independent thus
completing a process started 2-3 decades previously). The following
article says 1875 for the SCC which is within 10 years of ending
Canadian colonial status. (Before that the judicial committee of the
British House of Lords was the 'court of final appeal')

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supreme_Court_of_Canada#:~:text=It%20was%20not%20until%208,the%20Privy%20Council%20in%20London.

In any case both 1931 and 1875 are well before the advent of TV so
probably time to return to the subject.

(My favorite TV story is how the BBC interrupted their television
service in 1939 with the start of the war and re-started it in 1945
after VE Day - and starting with the same show (a Mickey Mouse flick)
in the same spot in the film where they had gone off the air.

Obviously television signals were considered a first rate beacon for
enemy bombers)

Yet I have posted previously that the Germans also had a TV service and
it ran until well into 1944 before it had to be suspended due to the
war. (I don't recall if it was a personnel shortage or equipment
shortages.) Mind you, I've forgotten how the signal was sent from
studio to viewers so it may NOT have gone over the air. I *do* recall
that almost no German had a TV in their homes: they went to public
places that had a primitive TV to see what was on so it was more like
going to a movie house to watch it. And it certainly didn't run 24x7
but then that's a relatively new innovation even here.

I still remember the broadcast day ending on CTV immediately after the
National News at 11 PM (which was initially over by 11:12 but gradually
expanded to a full hour); a few channels started fairly early, like 6
AM, but many didn't start until later.

I certainly remember the anthem following the close of that day's
broadcasting followed by either dead air or the screen with the 4
directions and a Sioux chief in full head dress regalia.
