The Bharma Dum is a regional variation on the Kerouacian ideal of the Dharma Bum, and is limited to both sides of the Alabama-Georgia border near Phenix City. The Bharma Dum prides himself on his ability to live without such petit bourgeois accoutrements as televisions, SUVs, houses, deodorant, or teeth. He is he modern-day embodiment of Rousseau's "Noble Savage" -- uncorrupted by the false needs and desires of civilization. In renouncing said accoutrements, the Bharma Dum frees himself from the "wage slave" existence of society's productive members (both blue and white collar varieties). Having freed himself from the time-constraining shackles of the working world, the Bharma Dum is free to paint, write poetry, go fishing, watch sunsets, and contemplate the mystery of life. In this sense, he is akin to the Hindu swami who sleeps in a cave, a forest, or even a marketplace, while subsisting on alms given by the local inhabitants. He is both a holy man and a prophet -- although his religion often consists of one's right to enjoy the divine experience of life in its true and natural state (e.g., smoking cheap cigars and drinking Ripple while watching the sun set over the Chattahoochee). Those of us who lack the ability to view life from outside the confines of the proverbial boxes that society has placed us in, often fail to conceive of spiritual benefits to be reaped from such an existence; for, as Don McLean once said, "Somewhere the dogs are barking and the children seem to know/That Jesus on the highway was a lost hobo."
