Andrea Fay Friedman, the actor with Down syndrome who costarred for two
seasons in the early 1990s on ABC's groundbreaking drama series Life Goes On,
died Sunday, Dec. 3, at her Santa Monica home of complications of Alzheimer's
disease. She was 53.

[How could they tell she had it?]

Her death was announced to The New York Times by her father, the
entertainment lawyer Hal Friedman. (According to the National Down Syndrome
Society, about 30% of people with Down syndrome in their 50s develop
Alzheimer's disease.)

Friedman joined the cast of Life Goes On in 1992, portraying Amanda Swanson,
a college student with Down syndrome who dates, and later elopes with, the
show's main character Charles "Corky" Thatcher (Chris Burke), who also has
Down syndrome. Both the series and Friedman's storyline were revolutionary in
both casting and fully-rounded depictions of people with the syndrome.

A college student herself at the time, Friedman had been working at a child-
care center where the parent of one of the kids composed music for the ABC
series, according to The Times. The connection proved consequential: Friedman
pitched ideas to the show's producers, who hired her as an actor to appear in
one episode. According to Hal Friedman, producers were so impressed with her
performance they wrote the character in for the show's final two seasons.

After Life Goes On, Friedman made guest appearances on TV series including
Baywatch, Touched By An Angel, Chicago Hope, Walker, Texas Ranger, 7th
Heaven, ER, Saving Grace and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Her most
recent credit was the 2019 holiday drama feature film Carol of the Bells, in
which she played the biological mother of the main character portrayed by RJ
Mitte.

In 2010, Friedman was cast in a Family Guy role that would soon have her
trading real-life barbs with Sarah Palin, then the recently-former governor
of Alaska running for U.S. vice president on a ticket with John McCain. In
the episode, Friedman's character says of her parents, "My dad's an
accountant and my mom is the former governor of Alaska." The line was a clear
reference to Palin, whose son Trig has Down syndrome.

Palin went on Fox News to condemn the episode, calling all those involved
"cruel, cold-hearted people."

Friedman responded by telling The New York Times that Palin "does not have a
sense of humor," adding, "In my family we think laughing is good. My parents
raised me to have a sense of humor and to live a normal life."

Outside her acting career, Friedman worked with U.C.L.A.'s Pathway program
for students with intellectual disabilities. In addition to her father, she
is survived by sister Katherine Holland and her husband Grant Holland; and
nephews Lawson and Andrew Holland.

You're an asshole. Just in case there was any doubt.

Boy, Life Goes On show sure was treacly garbage. Every single episode
was a "very special episode". Every episode was this stupid family
suffering some trauma or setback.

Critics gushed over it. It's funny how the critical darlings are often
forgotten to history and the populist shows the critics turn their noses
up at are the ones to last in reruns forever.

News flash: The public has low (some would say, non-existent) taste.

Yeah, I know. It's a bummer. Sorry to have to be the one to break it to you.

Every time a Republican gets caught doing something illegal (i.e., just about every
day or two), they always immediately issue two simultaneous statements about it:
1) "I didn't do it" (Standard denial, which of course only cult-members pay any attention to)
2) "Here's how I did it and why I did it and why it shouldn't matter to you and why you should go back to watching sports on TV"

I grew up with Chrissy Burke and was very happy for his success with
this. I hope someone took good care of the money he made doing it.

I have no recollection of them suffering a trauma or setback each week, but I
didn't watch it so who knows.

I think the TV family that suffered the most was the Evans on GOOD TIMES.

Not really. Critics usually fellate the shows for whoever produced them,
not the content of the show. Flavor of the month hacks like David E.
Kelley, Linda Bloodworth-Thomason, etc. Critics always care more about
the artist than the art.

They also salivate over "current issues", "ripped from the headlines",
"a Very Special", and other topical junk. That stuff ages like milk.
Your own South Park will suffer greatly for this in the future. Nobody's
going to know who gay fish Kanye West is in 25 years.

In fairness to South Park, I doubt it aspires to immortality.

I absolutely hated Good Times, and for all the right reasons. The
series was supposed to be about a strong family making its way forward,
even in Cabrini Green. Then the dad left, and the show became a farce
headed by a nearly talentless young actor who was armed not with a gift
for comedy or acting but with one of those unfunny stock phrases that
became all too common in the TV of the era.

"Where I Live," which starred Doug E. Doug, was infinitely better but
managed only 21 episodes in 1993.

It was a retooled vehicle for Burke after the same producer had
him in a telefilm that featured my occasionally-mentioned-here-in-years-past
favorite actress Liane Langland in a role that would not have carried
over into the series for which the telefilm was a failed pilot.
I wish he'd carried forward with a vehicle for her instead of Burke.

You're talking about Desperate.

BTW I grew up with Chrissy Burke. Everybody loved him. I'm glad for
the success he's had.

I wondered why nobody else ever recognized that he was completely talent
free. And continued to be so on THE LOVE BOAT, and MATCH GAME, and to this
day in ads to try to get you to call about Medicare insurance. On match
game he also proved himself to be thoroughly unlikable in person as well.

There is actually a quote by JW himself, saying words to the effect of "I
was never an actor; I'm just a comic who fell into a TV role". Basically,
his TV appearance on Good Times was just him doing his (not particularly
great) comedy act.

Two other comments:

1) I've seen him on Match Game; your comments are pretty much on target.
And, yes, seeing him hawking Medicare crap on TV is pretty awful.
And, yes, Medicare Advantage *is* crap - from all that I've heard
about it.

2) Actually, it is amazing how badly a lot of the 70s sitcoms have aged.
Good Times is hardly alone in this regard. For example, two
shows that I loved in the 70s - 3s Company and One Day At A Time -
are just unwatchable nowadays. I can't believe I liked them back then.

Well credit to him for admitting it.

I always liked the interview with Roger Moore, where he said he thought he
was rather wooden on screen, but he wasn’t about to turn down James Bond
money!

There’s a contestant who said she was going to give some of her winnings to
support a program Reagan was behind, and Walker spent the whole rest of the
time scowling at her and giving answers so stupid. He must’ve been trying
to blow her chances. You’d really expect the producers to straighten him
out at a commercial break.

I love how he doesn’t identify himself, just says hey, it’s me, like we’re
supposed to remember who he is and be impressed and call the number. Maybe
somebody licensed his name and he can’t use it without permission?

I never liked either of them. Valerie Bertinelli made one day at a time
sort of watchable. I always found the mother annoying, especially once they
introduced the ex-husband and he turned out to be a swell guy. They
should’ve had the nerve to make him a creep.

On threes company I always sort of preferred Jenny Lee Harrison, but I seem
to have been the only one.

As I mentioned elsewhere, the Norman Lear retrospective had a comment
that Lear hated the catch phrase, but he was told by the show runner
that it would help make the show popular with audiences. Every time he
delivered it, he got enthusiastic applause by the studio audience (as
enhanced by the laff track). I guess they knew that the tv audience that
wasn't looking for actual comedy responded to it as well.

Esther Rolle could act and she could be funny but when she had anything
to do, she was the matriarchal archetype, rarely playing a character.

John Amos was ok but they didn't do mc

And if anybody deserved MC, it was John Amos.

You could be right about Jimmie Walkers's best known name being "JJ",
which in turn could be a licensed character from the show, so they went
with "Hey, it's me!"

I prefer that to him, thinking that he’s such a big star. He needs no
introduction. I don’t remember if he ever said dynamite in the commercials
or not. I think this is his second year of doing them. I wonder if he said
JJ the first year and they didn’t let him the second…

https://youtu.be/S6eAWX9qUEM?si=GHjgWHYKSZCEgHWD

OK in 2021 he introduced himself as Jimmy “JJ“ Walker and has a sign
reading GOOD TIMES behind him and says dynamite.

https://youtu.be/vyNr5cyZUAg?si=sUb1eNPC7Qf99DqH

In 2022, he just introduces himself as “me” but he says dynamite at the
end.

https://youtu.be/EfkjrrX0AxQ?si=-9lj6FhaTeJcBlKc

In 2023, he refers to himself on the third person as “JJ” and says
dynamite.

Oh well, a lovely, budding conspiracy theory, crushed by the weight of
reality.

I dunno, as that could also describe an attrition of paid licenses...
