A teacher brought a gun to school and someone called the police who
sent the SWAT team. It turned out to be an old musket that the teacher
had brought to show his class.

https://vancouver.citynews.ca/video/2023/12/21/vintage-gun-for-school-presentation-prompts-vancouver-police-lockdown-of-lord-byng-secondary/

Happily, the police didn't kill anyone and didn't even feel the need to
charge the teacher.

The reason I say that is I am still haunted by an
incident that happened in Las Vegas a few years ago when an employee of
a Home Depot over-reacted to a patron with a gun. The employee, a
teenager, noticed a gun in the waistband of a patron's pants when he
bent over to look at something on the floor and expressed his anxiety
to a more senior staffer. The police were called and, due to the
location of the store, three separate police agencies sent officers.
They waited outside the store for the patron to leave and then
attempted to apprehend them. Each of the agencies yelled mutually
contradictory instructions simultaneously - Freeze! Drop the gun! Lie
down on the ground! - and he failed to obey all of them simultaneously
because it was utterly impossible. Whoever he failed to obey shot him
dead. The victim had the appropriate permit to do concealed carry, had
no criminal record, and had served in the US Army for 5 years. He had
done absolutely nothing wrong but got killed anyway.

As usual, the journalists involved were too lazy to even ask if the
weapon the teacher brought to school could be fired or was loaded.
Obviously the person who called the cops wouldn't know that when they
called so I'm not blaming him/her for making the call in the first
place. I just think it would have been relevant for the journalist to
relay that information after the fact. (I'm guessing that you can't
just go to a sporting goods store and buy black powder and musket balls
any more but I suppose both could be purchased online from a specialist
store or, failing that, fabricated at home if you have the appropriate
knowledge.)

Nah, you can easily get blackpowder and muzzle loader supplies
at pretty much any sporting goods store, it's a popular way of deer
hunting, though not as common as conventional firearms or bows.

Wow, I had no idea those supplies were still readily available!
Maybe I shouldn't have been surprised though; after all
re-enacting old wars seems pretty popular and I suppose the re-enactors
are not all making their own black powder! (I assume they don't put
balls in their weapons and just light off the powder to simulate
shooting without hurting anyone.)

Thanks for educating me, Ed!

Some people still hunt with blackpowder, thou they don't use muzzle loaders.

Did the family of the veteran receive any compensation

As I recall, the family did NOT receive compensation. They did sue the
relevant police agencies but the suit failed. I don't recall the reason
the suit failed though. Unfortunately, I don't remember the victim's
name and my search engine failed to find the case just now.
