Carnage

The doctors had sewn his grandfather's eye back in place,
rehinged the jawbone and fused some bone
where hot metal had entered his thoughts.
 
Back home, his grandson traced the carnage
with a soft touch.

He fell silent, tracing his own face
hoping it would remain intact.

LOL. Apart from my not yet having a grandson, it sounds like a near-perfect description of me.

Which is to say that it's a powerful and frighteningly accurate description of how one feels after having had his face (and skull) stitched and wired back together.
