Officials said a two-car Skokie Swift train was traveling southbound when it struck a CTA snow removal vehicle that was also traveling southbound in the Howard rail yard.
At least 38 people were hurt, three critically, in a crash involving a CTA train Thursday morning in the city's Rogers Park neighborhood on the north side, according to Chicago Fire Department.

I saw the overhead shot.

https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/breaking/ct-yellow-line-cta-crash-20231116-5zaq4d6rrfcgbjcntaqothlg64-story.html

The curving track overhead is the Red Line turn-back loop. That loop is
in the yard. But the tracks below for Skokie are main line, if I recall
where the signals are. I was confused by all the injuries, which means
the train wasn't going 5 mph, which is typical yard speed.

This is the tower operator's fault, I guess. The motorman, in shadow,
may have been unable to see the equipment, in daylight, in time to avoid
the collision.

There's this rule you must abide by on a railroad: Never put two trains
in the same block without extensive communication so that everybody
knows where everyone else is. They teach you that on day one.

Now come all the drug tests.... Keep in mind that whenever
there's a "revenue service" crash, or one with injuries,
a shitload of people get tested.

Not just the train operators/conductors, but the tower folk
and a *huge* bunch of secondaries...

The radio yard guy warned about crews in the right of way not ON THE TRACKS.
The beef cook/paramedic officer radioed Gimme an EMS plan 3, with peppers.
Adam, not too late to present at St. FRANCIS with neck pain.

Yeah, now that I have a better idea where the collision occurred, my
first guess was inapplicable. It was on the Skokie route tracks, not
within the terminal area. Speed limit was 35 mph, which explains why so
many were hurt. There had been a track bulletin several days earlier
that they were doing training with the snow plow, which makes sense
given that it's ahead of the first major snow fall.

CTA cab signals enforce physical blocks. If the motorman ignores the
signal, the emergency brakes are tripped, called a penalty brake
application 'cuz he gets hauled in before the supervisor. The snow
plow occupied the block. Even though the motorman failed to watch for
the snow plow as he was instructed to do, I want to know WHY the cab
signal didn't hold the revenue train in the previous block.

It's still the first rule of railroading: Do not put two trains in the
same block.

I had neck pain yesterday but the cause was unrelated to this collision.
Typically I don't ride this shuttle. I really despise the change at
Howard and if Evanston Purple is running through to the Loop, I ride
that. For evening programs downtown, Purple runs later than Skokie
Yellow.

If you have neck pain it could be the trauma of just seeing the wreckage on tv.
Clifford law filed a injury case in time for that evening's news.
One tv journalist observed they thought the wreckage was moved to the Metra commuter tracks. Silly imported scale salary eye candy-reportage.
