On New Year's Day, I ran some morning errands, and then after that
pretty gloriously did *nothing*! So I did get through some movies. But
no new GH (or Y&R & B&B) epies yesterday, though GH is back new today.

Anyway, I watched:

soaps: DOOL - Fri's ep & Mon's ep. Brat Holly takes the drugs she
brought to the New Year's party at the Bistro, and somehow OD's - she
ends up on a coma, and Tate is caught trying to hide her drugs, so Tate
has to tell the truth/throw Holly under the bus to Brady and Rafe. Ava
and Stefan are sweating buckets that the OD happened at the Bistro, and
then get a call from Clyde Weston (off-camera). Leo manages to convince
Chad and Everett to give Leo his old job back. Chad sees Stephanie and
Everett making out at midnight.

Siren (Syfy app) - Well, this is new: this flick was not available on
any streaming app (not even Tubi) - it was only available on Syfy (and
USA net) apps. That sucks because it meant not only commercials, but
*censoring* of the language and the nudity. [roll]
This 2016 film is the "first spinoff film" of 2012's "V/H/S", and
runs with the concept from the "Amateur Night" segment of "V/H/S",
bringing back Hannah Fierman as "Lily" - this movie reveals that she is
a "Lilith" (basically a succubus).
Anyway, in this, a bachelor party of an innocent groom-to-be (Chase
Williamson) is taken by the groom's idiot brother to the club of a shady
character named Nix (Justin Welborn) who deals in the supernatural.
There the groom comes across "Lily", whom the groom is convinced is
being human trafficked, and so works to set Lily free. Murderous
wackiness then ensues!
This was OK, though not nearly as good as the "Amateur Night"
segment of "V/H/S". I did like the ending of "Siren", however.

Barbie (Max) - This was neither as good fans said, nor as bad as critics
and detractors said. But the feminism message was pretty heavy-handed
(and Barbie never really does atone for taking Ken for granted). But
they do manage to take many of the edges off by good use of humor.
I was not expecting Ariana Greenblatt to show up in this (she plays
America Ferrera's mean tween daughter).
Anyway, overall, this was enjoyable.

V/H/S/2 - 2013 sequel to 2012's "V/H/S".
This is kind of like the inverse to the first "V/H/S" - in the
original film, the "framing" story sucked, but the individual horror
anthology segments were good. In "V/H/S/2", I was actually most
interested in the "framing" story, while I thought the individual
segments were much weaker than in the first film!
The one definitely good thing about the sequel is that it was
shorter than the original "V/H/S" film - four anthology segments instead
of five, and a runtime of 92 minutes vs. 116 minutes for "V/H/S".
The "framing" story has a P.I. (Lawrence Michael Levine) and his
pretty cute assistant (Kelsy Abbott, who unfortunately seems to be more
a writer than an actress, and more a voice actress than a live-action
actress) investigate an apparently missing young man. They break into
his place, and find another collection of... VHS tapes (including one
that is clearly from the first "V/H/S" film. The P.I. orders the cute
assistant to start watching the tapes...
We then get the four anthology stories. I thought the first two were
weak, especially the second one (which is basically "zombie with a GoPro
camera".
The third one is just weird! - It's apparently from Indonesia(!),
and is about a weird cult.
The only segment I mostly liked was the last one - "Slumber Party
Alien Abduction" (good title!) - which has apparently lead to the second
franchise "spinoff" film, called "Kids vs Aliens" (which coincidentally
I had been tempted to watch...): the spinoff film is based on this
segment... Anyway, after a so-so start, at least this one delivers a
genuine closing thrill/terror ride.
Next up: either "V/H/S: Viral" and/or "Kids vs Aliens"!

And what did you watch on New Year's Day?!

Seinfeld ep. With Kramer portrait. Rich old couple buys portrait and Kramer for dinner.
Local Nexstar wgn weather man Skilling worked the pm news. Nexstar is pathetic for firing him next month.
Disney local news is wardrobed up in Ladies suite coats . Did I start a trend??

Hey, thanks for asking!

I watched Rose Parade coverage on both ABC and NBC.

The ABC coverage skipped most of the floats, and one of the flyovers, for
an emphasis on the marching bands, my second least favorite thing in
parades.

The NBC coverage showed the floats and both flyovers and skipped most of
the marching bands, my second least favorite thing in parades, with none
whatsoever in the first hour.

Both networks shared a feed for the semi obligatory musical inserts, my
least favorite thing in parades.

I continue to wonder why the hell they don’t just set a camera on the
corner and let us see the whole damn parade.

The DVR also snagged a London parade, but at three hours long it was more
than I could handle on the same day, especially with the hosts, saying all
this stuff about acts I’ve never heard of being the most popular acts from
the United States.

The Cox says that I downloaded 101 GB of data on my first day back on the
gray web.

I came across the TZ marathon and stayed long enough to rewatch the
Cliff Robertson one in which he plays a pioneer. Damn, that was good
work.

That one doesn't sound familiar. I know I've watched all of them, but I
don't recall any pioneer episodes.

I'm sure you remember the episode but not the description. I didn't
recognize it but as soon as I saw the images I remembered the episode.

A bunch of movies on New Year's Day! The Holdovers (dir. Aleyander
Payne) with Paul Giamatti, it was absolutely wonderful. One of 2023's
best. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, it still holds up beautifully.
LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring was on TV so watched a little bit of
that and The Holiday with Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet, the worst of
the bunch.

All in all, a pretty OK New Year's Day movie marathon.

I keep hearing that. If it gets an Oscar nomination for best picture
I'll probably have to see it in the theater. The local theaters always
make a point to show the best picture nominees. I may be forced to see
"Poor Things" for the same reason.

> And what did you watch on New Year's Day?!

Aftre spending the day deep performng deep cleaning in the house
(including the decades of dust under the fridge), I got sick and
laid on the couch while a marathon of MST3K and related shows was
playing on YouTube. I do not remember what exactly they played or
what I saw.

I'd like some description of the poor volunteers that spend 2 months gluing peddles on floats in some Pomona warehouse.
Save glue pollution Tournament Committee and let the floats use PAINT. 5 square feet of natural popurri becomes the standard.
Even MLB added a pitch clock.

That's because his description sucked. This might help you remember:
"A pioneer looking for a cure for his very sick son".

The hell it did. If you know that series at all, you'd recognize that
episode from "pioneer" and "Cliff Robertson." C'mon already.
