Because NATO is not like one of Trump's apartment buildings with
tenants he can kick out at will if they get behind on their rent.

NATO members signed an agreement in 2014 to each spend at least 2% of
their GDP on their own defense infrastructure within the next 10 years.

Since then all the members have increased their spending toward the 2%,
many significantly so.

Every NATO member doesn't owe NATO 2%, and there's no "past due" money
from any of them like Trump claims. That isn't how the agreement works.

Such an outlandish statement from a major party US presidential
candidate is damaging to US interests in Europe on its own.

But anything to get into the headlines and change the subject away from
some important court decisions that can affect your campaign I guess.
