The sun seems to rise
from the neighbor's roof,
a man, in orange vest,
hangs from a truck
as a circus daredevil,
picking up old dinners
and diapers.

Across the way,
Frank waves, I wave back.

He feels responsible
for the death of his dog --
he left a door to the basement, opened,
and the dog tumbled down the steps.

"She was old and I was told not to leave the door
open -- I had to put her down
and feel guilty as hell."

"Sorry to hear that Frank."

There is an egg waiting for me, down the road,
Mike, the owner gets there at 5am.

Mike has a small boat, moored on Woodcleft Canal.

"It's my escape, he told me, away from the flat iron grill."

I mentioned Frank's dog problem.

"That's life", Mike says.

I wanted to tell the story of when my dog got slammed by a car,
when I was young.

Small talk, I figured, most in life have pet death stories.

The sun was now rising out of a tree top.

Time to hit the road, like my dog did.

That's life, indeed.
