Is it theoretically possible to overdose on Vitamin D by bathing in
cod-liver oil?

Haven't the foggiest. It would depend on whether human skin is
permeable to oil-based substances.

I do not know how much would actually be absorbed, but I am pretty sure
that it would leave you with body odor that would be a major problem.

Unlikely. CLO has 1356 IU/tablespoon (13.6g) (from Google)
(about 100 IU/g)
I, myself, take 5000 IU/day

I know Vitamin A can be absorbed by the skin - fish oil
acts as a carrier, and probably works for D as well.
https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamadermatology/article-abstract/520241

Overdose starts at 77k/day over several days.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitamin_D_toxicity#Recommended_supplement_limits

That would take absorbing 770 grams of oil a day, which seems challenging, and I
expect other effects of the oil would kick in first.

You know, the more I think about it, the more I believe this would be

I note that you will get Vitamin A toxicity a lot faster.
Limit is 3000 ug/day = 2 teaspoons CLO.

Of course, skin absorption isn't that efficient, but
Vit A accumulates in the liver until toxic effects appear.

XP ate rec.arts.sf.fandom shortly after I posted the above, and I just
now got around to admitting that there was no way I'd retrieve "The
Ballad of Chicken Little" and so forth, and started over.

I wonder what else has been going on that I should have responded to?
I'll know in a few weeks when I've sorted out the posts I've already
read.

Goes back to 2013.

Oh, not much has been going on in fandom, except Mercedes Lackey being
thrown out of the Nebula award ceremony and Stephanie Burke being
publicly denounced at Balticon, both for alleged wrongthink.

I've decided not to attend Balticon next year.

Welcome back.

As for your question about vitamin D, I don't know. It's probably a
bad idea to do anything sufficiently unnatural without good evidence
as to its safety.

Was that the one with the line "The arching sky is falling"? I once had
a slip of the tongue while rehearsing "The Green Hills of Earth," and
and Kate Gladstone ran with it.
