It's not a question of upkeep. These are homes that are kept up just fine.
They're just not occupied at the time the illegals come along, break in, and
say they're now living there. And the police, constrained by these
'progressive' laws that literally cite "squatters' rights", can do nothing
except arrest the homeowner for trying to kick the illegals out.

Remember, these "squatters" are people who aren't even legally allowed to be
in the country, let alone the home in question, and who do the leftist

Neither are they "squatters" for the properties in question were never
abandoned. In your New York example, the criminal falsely told the
police he was a tenant. The police did not believe it. Strange, though,
that they failed to arrest him for making a false statement to the
police in a criminal investigation. Isn't that obstruction of justice?

I understand that eviction is a civil matter and that only a sheriff may
perform that duty to enforce a judgement. But here we have all sorts of
crimes overlooked, illegal entry (if not breaking and entry) and
criminal trespass and lying to police. If there's any damage, then
vandalism. Police can certainly make an arrest without literally
carrying out the eviction.

rightful occupant calls the police, demonstrates evidence of occupancy
like a key to the lock, showing identification, mail with his own name
on it, utility bills, possibly even finding his own lease. Maybe there
is damage to a door or window.

The criminal claiming to be the rightful tenant has lied. He can be
charged with a crime for lying, for the breaking and entering, and for
criminal trespass.

Make the arrest. It is indeed a criminal matter.

That would be true in almost any other state. My only guess is the
police have become so unsure of any action being taken against
criminals now that if there is any doubt about the outcome they are
hesitant to go through the motions. Hard to otherwise explain why they
wouldn't take the obvious illegal occupants of the home into custody.

my aunt lives 500 miles away and has been suggesting I drive up to see
her. Might not be such a great idea if this story is true -
particularly if one cannot count on the cops to make a serious effort
to roust them.

Well they CERTAINLY are not tenants - a genuine tenant would be able
to produce receipts and/or cancelled checks.

And if the answer is "No habla Inglese" where is the breach of the
law? Particularly if the police tell them to get out - and they leave
but taking contents of the house...

Hell, if they are this bold what's to stop them from seeing someone
leave the house for work and move in while they are at work. I can't
that being very different from the case mentioned above other than the
length of time the people were illegally in the home.

mention any instances of pushback from the squatters or law enforcement
