Murder

So, it was gunfire that startled sleep last night,
cones marking sites where casings and blood dots
replaced life and amidst the screech of gulls
and fishing boats gentle rock,
the sun began to rise again unaware someone
would not view the morning,
but I did, wondering how close foolish anger would get
before the shot through the window and I dressed,
curious to what and why.

In the daybreak she walked, a stagger really, towards me --
I knew her, watched her grow up and it was now five in the morning;
“What the hell are you doing? “
and the red lights flashed off her face
as the cops loaded a body and sirens took him to the morgue.

“Just got off work, I tend bar over at The Moorings”, slur intact.

“Let me take you home; are you aware of what has happened?"
"No, that's ok, somebody shot I heard."

I insisted on that ride offer and she conceded --
so this morning, one body went north to permanent sleep
another, south to sleep it off.

I lit a smoke wondering why this happened
but I knew, for it continues to happen,
it's just now so close, when it used to be just
a show on the TV.

This one I couldn’t turn off, hoping the next victim
wasn't her or me, but one never knows.
