Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is 50 years old this year.
Released on June 30, 1971.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willy_Wonka_%26_the_Chocolate_Factory

I watched it again in the last year. Still a great fantasy.

Given this is cross posted to rec.arts.sf.written, one might
point out that the book dates from 1964.

Personally, I read the book before I saw the movie, and I still
enjoy the book more.

The Depp version was a bit different; I preferred the Wilder portrayal.

The Depp version was just strange. Gene Wilder is freaking awesome at
that point in his career.

Good to know that it was based on a book. I thought so but was not sure.

It was a loose adaptation. Quite a lot of it was new to the movie. Roald
Dahl was not please with the story changes, nor the title change, given
that Charlie was meant to be the central character.

Johnny Dipstick is just strange ... as is Tim Burton, and very slightly
less so his wife Helena Bonham-Carter.

> Gene Wilder is freaking awesome at that point in his career.

This is one of the very few musical movies I actually like. Another one
is "Bugsy Malone", although ruined by the ending simply turning into a
massive food fight.

Your parents never read / gave you Roald Dahl's books?? They should be
in prison for cruelty to children! ;-)

The original Roadl Dahl book is caled "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory".

Reportedly child actor Peter Ostrum (Charlie Bucket) was offered a
three picture deal, but he decided not to take it and became a
veterinarian instead. Originally there was meant to be at least one
more movie based on the sequel book "Charlie and the Great Glass
Elevator" which carries on the story immediately after the first book,
but Dahl disliked the Gene wilder movie so much that he refused to
allow any more movies or TV shows to be made. There is also an
unfinished third Roald Dahl book called "Charlie in the White House",
which may or may not have been what the third film would have been.

There is now a new prequel movie coming called "Wonka" due in March
2023, but it's not based on any Roald Dahl book - it's simply rubbish
made up by Hollyweird following a younger Wonka before he opened the
factory (i.e. discovering the Oompa Loompas, etc.).

The other best-known Roald Dahl book is "James and the Giant Peach". A
movie was made of it using stop-motion animation, but it's another of
weirdo Tim Burton's strange garbage.

Not really a "sci-fi" movie / book, although the sequel book does go
into space.

I forgot, the other well-known Roald Dahl book turned into a recent-ish
movie is "The BFG". For some reason (maybe it was too new at the time)
that story isn't included in my old box-set of Dalh books.

Like I said, fantasy, not science fiction.

Despite many people like book publishers lumping the two together,
sci-fi and fantasy are not the same thing (although in some cases they
crossover) ... technically both newsgroups are for sci-fi, not fantasy.

Another one I forgot (and not in my box-set of books) is "Matilda"
which also had a movie, and an up-coming sequel (although not based on
a Dahl book).

I've never read nor seen either of these last two stories.

Everybody agrees that science fiction and fantasy are two different
things. However, no two people agree on the location of the line between
them. See the FAQ for rasw:

<http://leepers.us/evelyn/faqs/sf-written.htm#08>

> technically both newsgroups are for sci-fi, not fantasy.

No, at least the "written" newgroup is for Speculative Fiction, which
includes both science fiction and fantasy. Again, see the FAQ:

I never liked it. Boring and obvious was, IIRC, my conclusion.

So, having read some of the other responses, I can say:

-- I agree with Dahl; I'm sure the book was a /lot/ better
-- I took one look at Depp-as-Wonka and lost all interest in the
remake
-- Helena Bonham-Carter did an exellent job in the Harry Potter
movies; sadly, she then played the same role in other movies, where it
was not actually appropriate
-- I did like the /James and the Giant Peach/ movie, particularly the
rhinosaurus
-- wasn't /The Witches/ (the 1990 one, I haven't seen the newer one
yet) also from a book by Dahl? -- now, /that/ was a good movie!
--
"I begin to envy Petronius."
"I have envied him long since."

I read about 50/50 science fiction and fantasy. I post both reviews
here. This is a Speculative Fiction group according to the FAQ.

I'd argue that "The Witches" is better known than both "James and the
Giant Peach" and "The BFG". There are also movie adaptions of "Danny,
the Champion of the World" and "Fantastic Mr. Fox." Dahl also wrote
the script for the movie "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang."

It's been so long I have forgotten whether Aki is in the book and, if
she is, whether she dies.

In the film this is necessary to clear the decks for his cover.
Traditional Family Values can be a bitch.

I didn't enjoy "Fantasic Mr. Fox": I kept /hearing/ the Famous Actor,
but never /seeing/ him. What can I say? Other than this is the only
instance of that particular problem I can recall.

"Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" was a great film, even if the middle is a
bit of a muddle. At least, the VHS/DVD versions were; I don't recall
noticing this when I saw it in the theater.

I liked it when I saw it, but I was 7. Later I read the book and liked
that better. (BTW, there's a sequel: Chitty is back, and she's a camper!

Aki was created for the movie. Kissy is in the novel but a somewhat
different character.

>In the film this is necessary to clear the decks for his cover.
>Traditional Family Values can be a bitch.

Dahl has said he felt he was olbiged to write to some formula in which
one of Bond's lovers dies at a certain point (spurring on Bond's later
actions), but he accidentally created an unforgetable Bond girl with an
unnecessary and unsatisfying death. Bond was hardly affected by it.

He was never asked back to write another screenplay for anyone after
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

The wikipedia synopsis sounds awful, but did lead me to a bit of trivia
I don't remember knowing before: there were several actual race cars named
"Chitty Chitty Bang Bang", which apparently were the inspiration for the
book.

Considering Fleming had died...

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was published posthumously.
