The 1980s and 1990s poetry slam and rap styles are absolutely considered "old school" now, for one example:

The article says that the tube-lit "signage" hanging on the wall near the stage is "old school" -- not the poetry.

Next time try reading the article before posting it, moron.

Sure, the poetry of that area is old school, relatively.

Really, Donkey?

Here, again, is a detailed explanation of what is meant by "Old School":

old-school
1 of 2
adjective
ˈōl(d)-ˌskül
Synonyms of old-school
1 : adhering to traditional policies or practices
an old-school coach
2 : characteristic or evocative of an earlier or original style, manner, or form

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/old-school

The following is taken from Study.com:

What is Traditional Poetry?

Traditional poetry refers to poetry forms that have been around for a long time and typically follow a specific structure. Traditional poems often rhyme, but rhyme is just one of the many structural elements that may be included. Depending on the type, the poem may also need to include a specific number of lines or syllables, address a certain type of subject matter, or follow a particular rhythm or meter. Traditional poetry must strictly adhere to a particular form.

What is Contemporary Poetry?

In contrast to traditional poetry, modern or contemporary poetry is much more flexible and does not follow a specific form. It is typically written in free verse, which does not require any specific rhyme or meter. Contemporary poetry often uses more accessible language familiar to modern readers. Furthermore, contemporary poems are often brief compared to certain traditional poems, such as ballads or epic poetry.

Features of Traditional Poetry

Each type of traditional poetry has its own rules and structure. These vary greatly between different types; for example, the rules followed by a sonnet are very different from those used when writing a haiku. Here are a few of the most common features of traditional poetry:

Rhyme: Many forms of traditional poetry rhyme, often utilizing a specific rhyme scheme in which certain lines of the poem must rhyme with each other.
Syllables: Some forms of poetry have rules defining how many syllables should appear in each line of the poem.
Meter: The pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line. For example, many traditional English poems (including Shakespeare's sonnets) were written in iambic pentameter, meaning that there are five pairs of syllables with a pattern of alternating stressed and unstressed syllables.
Length: Some traditional poems require a specific number of lines. Others, while not as specific about length requirements, are still expected to follow certain general expectations (e.g., epic poems like The Odyssey are always very long).
Subject matter: Some forms of poetry have rules about the poem's content, such as that it must tell a story.

Traditional Poetry Types

There are many types of traditional poetry from cultures around the world. A few of the most popular types include ballads, sonnets, blank verse poetry, haikus, and sestinas.

https://study.com/learn/lesson/traditional-poetry-features-poems.html

How does "slam" and "rap" poetry from the 1980s and 90s qualify as "traditional" rather than "contemporary"?

Some examples of what "old school" can and does mean...:

https://www.quora.com/What-does-old-school-mean

************* Honestly? I think it means something different for everyone. To me, if a person is old school, they are old fashioned enough that they don’t fit in with new school society, they are strong and gritty, they work hard and don’t complain, they handle business and live honorably. If something is old school, it is of a style or design from times past. Probably obsolete by modern standards, but just as good or not good as it was back in the day. Based on observations I’ve had, it’s better to seek to be old school than new school. New school seems pretty self destructive --Richard Parker ******

What does "old school" mean to you and what things qualify as “old school"?

‘Old school’ describes something, or some custom or attitude from a past generation that is, in the present time, held in respect.

What kind of things qualify as ‘old school’ ? Old school manners, for instance, men being very respectful to women in a rather “courtly” way. Old school humour - humour that is not hurtful to any section of society, just…well…silly, funny at nobody’s expense. Old school politics, in both the USA and UK for instance, “old school Republicans/Conservatives” exhibit more respect for their peers and their opponents than is often seen today. ----Ann Clark *******************

So someone on Quora "think[s] it means" different things to different people? Whoop-de-damn-do.

I gave you the Merriam-Webster definition. The M-W definition is what the term *actually* means -- not how some people use it.

However, even Mr. Parker (quoted by you above) admits that it is "Probably obsolete by modern standards."

Rap and slam poetry are hardly obsolete.

They may have started half a century ago, but they're still a big part of the *present day* culture. They are, therefore, neither "obsolete," nor "old school."

Ann Clark (also quoted by you) specifies that old school means "from a past generation." Again, she is using "old school" to represent various "custom[s] or attitude[s]" from the past that are looked back on with respect. The examples she gives (manners, non-hurtful humor, non-mud-slinging political campaigns) are no longer a part of our present day culture.

Furthermore, words have different meanings depending on the context in which they are used. "Old school poetry," as I have shown from the article on Study.com, refers to *traditional* poetry, as opposed to modern or free verse.

Once again, you have either not read the article you googled, or failed to understand it.

The shit runs

Deep and black

rancid tuna
....I am the reason
you pinch your nostrils
I am
the shitstain.

No, you dumbassed, Donkey, it cannot.

It is *only* considered "old school" once the form has gone out of fashion.

Rhymed/metered verse is "old school" because it is has been replaced by Modern Verse.

Rap/Slam is still alive and well and going strong. (For the sake of argument, we'll ignore that it isn't poetry.)

When Rap/Slam is replaced by another form of poetry, it will become "old school."

Until such time, it's still *current.*

How can one Donkey be so stupid?

To me, if a person is old school, they are old fashioned enough that they don’t fit in with new school society, they are strong and gritty, they work hard and don’t complain, they handle business and live honorably. If something is old school, it is of a style or design from times past. Probably obsolete by modern standards, but just as good or not good as it was back in the day. Based on observations I’ve had, it’s better to seek to be old school than new school. New school seems pretty self destructive --Richard Parker ******
