Drinking, TB, cooping? Something got him, unfortunately. There is a picture of Poe's cellar at the home he lived at in Philadelphia. The cellar is appropriately dark and dank.

We don't remember reading the following letter, but Michael must be familiar with it:

"Dear Sir,
There is a gentleman, rather the worse for wear, at Ryan’s 4th ward polls, who goes under the cognomen of Edgar A. Poe, and who appears in great distress, & he says he is acquainted with you, and I assure you, he is in need of immediate assistance.
Yours, in haste,
JOS. W. WALKER
To Dr. J.E. Snodgrass."

Oh, to be able to temporarily travel back in time and save the man.
Dr. NancyGene, packing her medicine bag and some money of the time.

We'll never know the circumstances regarding Poe's death, but I think it obvious that he was murdered. Whether from having been beaten and forced to drink (cooping), or whether he was beaten and robbed by the two suspicious men who were seen following him on a train, or whether he was beaten by the brothers of his fiance, etc., the facts remain that he was wearing ill-fitting, soiled clothes and that any money he might have had (one theory holds that he'd been raising subscription money for his proposed journal and was carrying a very large sum) was gone.

But my favorite "explanation" regarding Poe's death comes from poet, publisher and professional wrestler, C Ra McGuirt: "Poe died of being Poe."
