Today's poem on Penny's Poetry Blog:
Doggerel, by George J. Dance

Doggerel

The rowdy dogs that frolic in the park
may run, and jump, and gambol playfully,
but all dogs when they spy a likely tree
must lift a nether leg and leave a mark.
Some dogs must growl at every bird and frog,
and some must leave their stools upon the street,
and some must bark at every other dog,
and some must snap at every poor man's feet.
A man who's being dogged must learn to fight,
to put the boots to any mangy cur
that's troubled by the fleas amidst its fur
and make the mongrel yowl! Then doggie might
run off to find a more defenceless bone
and leave the weary traveller alone.

It's not meant to be species-specific. Back in the day here, one had to worry about packs of dogs. But the same principles would apply for, say, a pack of monkeys.

Thanks, Faraway Star. This was my first sonnet. (Well, my second; the first was a protest poem I wrote at 16 about Trudeau Sr. invoking the War Measures Act, but that shouldn't count.) It was in 2007, after I'd been on RAP a few months, and encountered many of the canine types described here. One thing they were snapping at me about at the time was that I didn't write any poetry. Sonnets were the gold standard in those days; Hammes, who basically ran RAP in those days, was a master sonneteer, who wrote hundreds if not thousands. So I decided to write a sonnet. I rolled a doob, and went for a walk; came up with the "dog" conceit a few minutes out; started coming up with rhymes; and came home with the first draft just needing to be typed out. Decades after my first attempts, I was hooked on writing poetry again.

Dennis M. Hammes comes to mind lately, as I watch the DVD collection of the recent television series. Fargo, which is set near and around Hammes' and John Berryman's, stomping grounds.

Back then, the poetry forms were interesting to read, read about, and sometimes try.

>> Quite a good read...!

Hi GD and again good back story..!
