The Snow Man, by Wallace Stevens

One must have a mind of winter

I'd call it my favorite Stevens poem. It's the first one I read; it was assigned in my one modern poetry class back in uni. I actually didn't like it at all back then. But I've found that Stevens is a lot like David Bowie; anything new he did sounded very weird at first, but grew on me over time.

Interesting comparison, with David Bowie, another all time favorite.

Why didn't you like it?
Do you see an advocation of White Supremacy in the poem?
Why is it titled "The Snow Man" instead of "The Snowman?"
Do you think that "shagged" has a sexual meaning in the poem?
There isn't actually a snowman in the poem, so why is it "The Snow Man?"
What is Stevens saying about Man and Nature?
Was Billy Preston's song "Nothing from Nothing" based on this poem?

> But I've found that Stevens is a lot like David Bowie; anything new he did sounded very weird at first, but grew on me over time.
We don't care for David Bowie. What Stevens and Bowie have in common is that they are both dead.

I found it didactic, or preachy. But it's one long run-on sentence, that doesn't have to be interpreted that way.

No. Do you?

Because it's not a poem about a a snowman. Snowmen have nothing to do with it.

No; "shagged" obviously has its primary meaning:
"verb (1)
shagged; shagging
intransitive verb
: to fall or hang in shaggy masses"
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/shag

What do you think?

See above.

I think he's saying that one must purge our minds of our ideas about the thing (in this case, the winter landscape) in order to see the thing in itself. What do you think he's saying?

> Was Billy Preston's song "Nothing from Nothing" based on this poem?

Doubtful. Where would you get an idea like that from? The two occurrences of "Nothing" in the last line?

Do you think anyone cares whether you care for David Bowie or not?

You probably prefer Pat Boone and Tiny Tim to David Bowie and Wallace Stevens, right?

🙂

George Dance, you should have stated when you posted the poem that you used to find it didactic/preachy, then give a reason (that doesn't mention glitter people) why you changed your mind. The poem is not a run-on sentence--it is correctly punctuated. The two semicolons are there because the lists/reasons he gives already contain several commas.

> > Do you see an advocation of White Supremacy in the poem?

Perhaps it's subliminal in the poem? Quoting Mr. Stevens, "“Who’s the coon?"

> > Why is it titled "The Snow Man" instead of "The Snowman?"

Then why isn't it "The Trash Man" or "The Woods Man?"

If we interpret the poem in "modern" language, it says that the junipers were raped with ice. Now, why wouldn't someone want to change the wording to make it less offensive? If it's not under copyright, someone should do that, right?

Therefore, it could also be "The Trash Man?"

Don't confuse what we see in Nature with what we see in Man.

> > Was Billy Preston's song "Nothing from Nothing" based on this poem?

Obviously. It could also have been inspired by Frances Ellen Watkins Harper's poem "Nothing and Something."

No more than anyone cares that the Columbus Pissbums think that it is a "lovely" poem or that David Bowie is an "all-time favorite" of theirs.
