Here's a link to a compressed .rar file (120 MB) that has 45 mp3s
(derived from YouTube links) for the May pre-1947 nominations:

https://app.box.com/s/a51x3z7dakqcagl9vzh4jvf0mtomzd08

it should take only a minute or so to download to a PC

after 'unzipping' to a suitably named new folder (eg 'Obscurities 2022
05 Pre-1947') you can then select all files in the folder to play in
your fave music player (eg Winamp) - and since they'll be listed
by artist you can assess each song independent of knowing who the
nominator is

the contents of this .rar file (sorted by artist):

Al Jolson - Swanee.mp3
Albert Ammons - Swanee River Boogie - 1946.mp3
Amos Milburn - My Baby's Boogying.mp3
Arthur 'Big Boy' Crudup - So Glad You 're Mine - 1946.mp3
Bea Booze - See See Rider Blues - 1943.mp3

Duke Ellington - In A Mellotone - 1940.mp3

It does seem ridiculous that a classical viola player who never played
or sang on any of his own records would anoint himself king. However, I
have to say that I like a lot of his records from the late 1920s,
especially the ones featuring Bix Beiderbecke and/or Bing Crosby. He
certainly had an ear for talent, and he knew how to put together a
record that the public would buy.
Also he was hardly the first white guy who cashed in on the jazz craze.

Apologies, there are two mp3 file name only errors in the list of .rar
contents:

1.
>Count Basie f. Lester Young - Kansas City.mp3
s/b Count Basie f. Lester Young - Lester Leaps In.mp3

2.

One of my favorite pop records of the era which I look forward to
voting for wherever possible.

The song was promptly banned here in UK of course not just for the use
of "Coca-Cola" in the title but for the implied way the women in the
song worked for that Yankee dollar

I can't trace such a release either in USA or UK (tho it DID appear
here in UK on a 45RPM in 1970)

Why not? Did they think that lots of their citizens did not know about them and they wanted to keep it that way?

Last time we did this contest you professed your admiration for Chick
Webb. I was hoping you'd nominate something by EF with the Chick Webb
band, like "Rock It For Me, " "A-Tisket A-Tasket," "Wacky Dust," or
"Tain't What You Do (It's The Way That You Do It)." Oh, well, there's
always August :)

Sigh!

We are talking here about the BBC who had the monopoly on UK radio and
who would routinely ban records on any number of grounds with lyrics
implying prostitution automatically registering very high on their "no
no" list

Was "Tom Dooley" banned, or was hanging okay, but paying for sex not okay?

Yes, I don't know how well it did in February for Roger
but your "Why Don't You Do Right - Lil Green" for me at least
was one of the very best songs nominated for May.

Classic Americana perhaps, but it would not have reached the last 8
(or last 16?). If not released on a record in the 40s, Bill might as
well take the opportunity to select a more competitive record (that he
also personally likes?).

Some suggestions (if not past nominated) :-)

Shame On You - Spade Cooley - 1944
Shame On You - Tex Williams - 1945
Be-Baba-Leba - Helen Humes w. Bill Doggett Octet - 1945
Cow-Cow Boogie - Ink Spots w. Ella Fitzgerald - 1944
Blues in the Night - Dinah Shore - 1942
Born To Lose - Ted Daffan's Texans - 1942
Junker Blues - Champion Jack Dupree - 1941
Begin The Beguine - Django Reinhardt - 1940
Sing Sing Sing - Benny Goodman - 1938
Bring It On Home To Grandma - Cliff Bruner & His Texas Wanderers -
1938
Let Yourself Go - Fred Astaire - 1936 (early white rock'n'roll !!!)
Swingtime In The Rockies - Benny Goodman AHO - 1936 (early white
rock'n'roll !!!)
I'm Gonna Sit Right Down And Write Myself A Letter - The Boswell

It doesn't have to have been released on a record back then to be eligible. In the first ever contest in February of 2019 I nominated a Billie Holiday recording from a TV show that had not been released on a record. The Cagney is good as long as it was recorded in 1946 or before.

A song I never liked,"Tom Dooley" was played regularly on our radio
and was a big hit in the Kingston Trio version (#5 in NME) buit even
bigger in the local Lonnie Donegan cover (#3)

I'm not sayin' this is a contest winner but there *is* one record

Lil Johnson - Stavin' Chain (That Rockin' Swing) {take 1} - 1937
sub-genre: risqué Blues

In 1936 and 1937, Lil Johnson recorded over 40 songs, mostly for ARC,
released on Vocalion.

What is a/Who is, Stavin’ Chain?

LYRICS

If you don't shake you won't get no cake
If you don't hum I'm gonna give you none
You can't ride, honey, you can't ride this train
I'm the chief engineer, I'm gonna run it like Stavin' Chain

I asked you in the morning to treat me right
You put me off, tell me "Wait 'til night"
Now, you can't ride, honey, you can't ride this train
I'm the chief engineer, I'm gonna run it like Stavin' Chain

Back your horse out my stable, back him out fast
I got another jockey, get yourself another mare
Now, you can't ride, honey, you can't ride my train
I'm the chief engineer, I'm gonna run it like Stavin' Chain

Stavin' Chain was a man of might
He saved up his money just to ride all night
Now, you can't ride, honey, you can't ride my train
I'm the chief engineer, I'm gonna run it like Stavin' Chain

Ride, baby, ride!

I got-to-yer house this mornin' about half past four
Found another woman comin' out your door
Now, you can't ride, honey, you can't ride this train
I'm the chief engineer, I'm gonna run it like Stavin' Chain

Yeah!

It doesn't affect eligibility, but this is the 1938 Decca version. I
don't know where the 1929 date comes from. Also it's just "My Daddy
Rocks Me," no parenthetical phrase.

The original version is from 1922 on Black Swan and is titled "My *Man*
Rocks Me (With One Steady Roll)."

Here's the 1922 version:

And here's "My Daddy Rocks Me - No. 2," another Decca release:

Thanks for all the info. I got the 1929 date from the YouTube info (or at
least that it's included in the 1925-'29 collected works), but the recording
certainly sounds like 1938. I knew the 1922 version, but I didn't think too
many of us would appreciate that dusty antique, even if there's a fine gem
underneath the dust.
