spam posts (pirate movies, crytpto-coins, impotence drugs etc.).
Rather than fix the problem, Gooogle are taking their bat and ball and
going home.

I can't find any message like this in Google Groups, just another
fantasy of the asswipe.

The asswipe has no influence over Google, I mean a dial-up ISP with two
clients is not exactly a threat.

My apologies, the banner does appear and yes Goggle Groups is closing
the door on their Usenet service and no the asswipe had no influence in
this decision.

Their explanation:

Why is Google Groups support for Usenet ending?
Over the last several years, legitimate activity in text-based Usenet
groups has declined significantly because users have moved to more
modern technologies and formats such as social media and web-based
forums. Much of the content being disseminated via Usenet today is
binary (non-text) file sharing, which Google Groups does not support, as
well as spam.

I'd say not, but all of the spam complaints that have gone in to Google
for the past few months might have contributed.

It's good news anyway, no more filters or rules will be needed from
February.
