Sigh... I was working as a programmer through the period when
virtual memory came in, and specifically came in on IBM
mainframes. Alas, far too many programmers reacted to the advent
by assuming that program efficiency of space no longer mattered
at all. And worse, that locality of reference had no use. Vast
amounts of very, very bad, slow running code were written by
people who didn't understand how vitual memory worked, and far
too many of them were "experienced" programmers.

The first time I saw virtual memory was on a new Vax system at our service bureau. I had a 2000 x 2000 image array that was sorted by rows and needed to be organized by columns, so I wrote a very simple program with a loop that set b(j,i) - a(i,j). It worked perfectly, used a chargeable CPU time of 0.1 seconds, and an elapsed time of 5 hours. Every cycle was a cache miss. I was not popular.
