Hi,

I wonder whether anyone's still around, or this is completely empty.

I check in nearly every day. And sometimes I think about posting.

I devote my spare energy to non-fiction these days:

Don't just think about it, do it! :)

> I devote my spare energy to non-fiction these days:

I'd rather talk about it here than reading something on some website.
But I did have a look anyway. :)

Guess it could be hard to connect needle-work to sci-fi. Or not,
depending on inspiration. Hand crafting is cool though. The stuff on the
pictures I found looks impressive, and way too fiddly for me to try. :)

I crochetted my own winter hat a year or two ago. Also sewed my own
masks when Corona started. And turned old quilt covers into square
shirts (for sitting on the balcony when it's too cold for just a
undershirt - what I normally wear).

Talking about balcony, the landlord attached them to the flats here 3
years ago and I bought a ton of pots and soil and plants. Growing my own
tomatoes and other stuff (herbs, some fruit, flowers, more vegs). Sooo
nice!

Sitting there is also where I do the sewing and crochetting when I've
done enough 'watching my plants grow'. :)

I still reread my two bigger stories now and then, polishing, and trying

them.

I have several wsip (works supposedly in progress), but basically my
entire life has been on hold for over a year, and some things have to
get sorted out before I can even hope to have any sort of motivation.

I occasionally post snippets of older stuff on Reddit, hoping a
comment or two might spark me into working on it more. Sadly, so far,
nothing has struck a chord.

Making matters worse, I bought a copy of "Save the Cat Writes a Novel"
by Jessica Brody. It's all about structuring and necessary parts of a
story. Even without accepting it as gospel, it makes enough sense that
I can see/understand why no story over 10K words that I've written has
ever drawn any interest from agents/publishers. After maybe six
months, I'm only about one-fourth of the way through it and would have
to start over if I was to try to really absorb the info with intent to
use it.

I'm open to offering comments (for what they're worth) on
problems/thoughts/discussions other want to bring in, but when it
comes to new content which might be even remotely interesting, I'm a
dry hole.

Aw man, hope you get that sorted out to your satisfaction. :)

Oh, Reddit. I don't hang out there. A Steam friend mentioned it's an odd
place. He asks a question for a build in Terraria, and gets a ton of
upvotes, but no reply, or something weird like that.

Might be better to post your snippets here? :)

Maybe just subconsciously absorb what you agree with, and ignore the
rest as "stuff claimed to be fact and true for everyone writing
everywhere" (which is automatically nonsense :) )?

Oh, I have not written anything new for years probably now, even my
ramblings chatting with people is just old stuff in new dressing. :P

I'm still stuck in the third book of the Seasons & Elements trilogy, not
sure how to get to the end, and the problem is probably knowing where it
should go (the characters decided on a course of action, which will just
take 20 years, or 15 from the start of the third book).

Mind, I don't know what exactly they're going to do, just that it
involves people who have to grow up first. (Having bred a special kind
of people by those able and willing to 'produce' them.)

Reddit has something like fifty different subreddits for writing,
divided by genre, focus, etc., and they're all different.

Your friend doesn't know the old wisdom about any group on the
Internet -- to find out something, you don't ask a question, you post
wrong information. A thousand people who'd never bother helping a
stranger will leap at the chance to show off their expertise.

>Might be better to post your snippets here? :)

I think I sort of wore out my welcome doing that some years ago. Then,
as now, I was searching through my old stuff, trying to find which (if
any) might be worth working on again. It was lively for a very short
while but quickly petered out.

Alas, not that can appropriately be discussed here. Bad

Oh, how can you have too much fun with a 3D printer? :))

What item of furniture did you build? Anything you could imagine being
inhabited by a folk of gnomes? (To try to stay somewhat on topic. :P )

I think that'd be too awkward for me, never mind that forums online are
like the wheel re-invented, square, compared to Usenet newsgroups all-
comfort spaceflight.

Lol.

How do you translate that to needing inspiration for a building in
Terraria? (A game where you - among other things - can place blocks you
craft or find to build whatever you like. If curious you can search for
"Terraria builds houses" images. My friend doesn't want to build a
typical house or castle, and use up a particular kind of block he has
too many of.)

Not much going on here for years I think, could be a welcome change to
the quiet.

I can add bits from the stories I started that never got anywhere, maybe
alternate one you one I, per week? :)

I'm working on a space opera--complete with swamps on Venus and
canals on Mars--because I wanted to. I fudged this by placing
the action in the sixth century After the Reunion, which was
preceded by an Interregnum of at least a thousand years, during
which space travel and much other technology were lost, and before
which those worlds were terraformed.

Peter Trei recommended Reddit to me; I took a look at its home

into IKEA for the first time; the mind was overwhelmed by the
overwhelming data.

I just realized I don't remember the rules for posting, i.e. word
count limit, any restrictions on content, etc..

The only thing I'm even mildly interested in writing now is a treatise
on how social changes have affected the regular moving/reinvention of
immortals through the ages (e.g. 3rd Century -- just walk a week in
any direction, and no one will suspect you're older than you look, but
you can't have more wealth than you can carry; 21st Century -- can
just move across the city and huge fortunes transferred
electronically, but you have to forge a new biometric identity).

The topic is the writing of SFF, and whatever leads to it.

Sound like an interesting concept, and I for one don't remember
encountering it--not recently, anyway. Go for it.

Heh, interesting thought.

I'd digress into something else though. If immortals have been around
all the time, why are they hiding, how could they not be known. And in
the end, how could it be the same world with them around? (I have that
problem with every story that puts magic or other non-real things into
our world.)

Whatever any additions brought to Earth's inhabitants would have had to
have changed history at some point and branched off a different
timeline. So I need an explanation on why it looks the same despite
that.

Being immortal comes in many flavors.

Ever watch the movie "Only Lovers Left Alive" (2013)? It's sort of a
day-in-the-life (but it's about vampires, so maybe night-in-the-life
is more appropriate) study of romance/ennui/and the basic
psychology/psychiatry of immortals. It's implicit how vulnerable they
are and shows why they must keep themselves hidden. (I highly
recommend watching it. It's not in the terror/horror genre. One
reviewer said it's "of mood and metaphor." Quite beautifully shot.)

Another kind of immortality is shown in the tv series "Forever"
(2014-2015). Whenever he's killed, he's resurrected (naked in the
middle of a river). Several times in his past, others have learned of
his condition. The first time, he was locked in a mental hospital.
Once, they drained him of his blood to find the cause (and possibly
duplicate it), and another time, he was hung. Obviously, he has a
vested interest in keeping it a secret ("Hang me once, shame on you;
hang me twice . . .").

That series also has a different character (an insane one) with the
same condition. He went through a period where he was also studied by
leading scientists, Nazi scientists. I think it's quite understandable
why he now keeps it secret.

(This series can be streamed for free on the "CWseed" channel.)

What it boils down to is it always has been, and probably always will
be, that immortals face people who want to destroy them for religious
reasons, people who want to dissect them for scientific reasons,
people who desire/demand the secret for themselves, and hordes who
fear anyone who's even slightly different.

Living 'undercover' as a mortal is the only way they can have anything
approaching a quiet life.

>Whatever any additions brought to Earth's inhabitants would have had to
>have changed history at some point and branched off a different

Until you can examine other timelines and make comparisons, everything
will always look normal. Everyone from biologists to geologists to
cosmologists always find a rational explanation for why things are the
way they are. Anyone who says "No, this can't be normal, some weird
alien/time-meddler/god/magic must have effected this" is automatically
branded a crackpot and roundly ignored.

One of my pet projects (so far only on paper, awaiting winning the
lottery before I can do anything about it) is a model railroad layout
based on the idea that Greeks invented a steam locomotive (Heron of
Alexandria was so very, very close . . .). To maintain some aspect of
socioeconomic reality, it's a single engine and one small flatcar
moving blocks of stones from a quarry to the seaside where they're
used to build a fortress or loaded onto ships for export.

Another project (of the same stature) is to build a quad-bike using
only late 19th Century materials and techniques. It has always seemed
odd to me they weren't invented alongside motorcycles. People did
propose tricycles, but they were inherently unsafe and impractical as
personal vehicles. To my way of thinking, quad-bikes should/could have
been a natural step between horses and automobiles.

Is there a timeline where railroads have been around since the 1st
Century? Is there a timeline where quad-bikes became the norm and
automobiles never really developed?

Why would anyone within those timelines ever question it?

It's an entertainment center (basically a glorified
shelving unit). I needed one that would fit into a
specific space and accommodate three game systems,
a blu-ray player, a DVD player, and a VCR.

I doubt there's enough empty space in it for gnome
occupancy. Or for the conga rats to practice their
line dancing, either. ;)

Oooh, a VCR! Couldn't find one when I went to buy one some years ago
(mine stopped working some time before that). These days I have a hdd
connected to the TV to 'tape' things.

What game systems are those? Consoles? (I don't know anything about
them, I'm just playing games on the PC, Steam games mostly these days.)

Hehe, but gnomes have inter-space-dimensional-warping abilities, they
can squeeze even into space that isn't there! ;P

Though I guess the rats do have to line up somewhere on the top maybe.

Hm, doesn't sound like something I'd want to watch, the title alone
sends me in the other direction. Now if it were horror, I might give it
a shot (and then ask google about spoilers on the ending, bored with it,
and go do something fun instead :) ).

What they are like though, depends entirely of the person who makes them
up. I gave my evil overlords a big age (around 5k to 9k years old) and
defined them as irremovable (so kind of 'immortal') because a normal
lifespan for an evil overlord doesn't make any sense to me. (They use
magic to prevent ageing, most of them are natural Healers and can fix
themselves, and by now adjust themselves any which way they like, too.
The amount of magic they can use grows over time, so to normal people
they're way overpowered.)

And they're proper evil overlords and ladies, not vulnerable, and
certainly not hidden. Long ago they got together to scare the normal
people into taking up residence in their cities - each evil over-person
has their own little plot - and they each rule them as they see fit
(varying types of whacko ideas that the people have to live by).

Their numbers went down over the millenia as they off each other now and
then, mainly instigated by the two main evil overlords. But most of them
would just prefer to be left alone in their plot.

Oh, here I'm rambling again! :)

I watched that. Now why/how he ends up naked in a river is what I'd want
to know. :)

(Mind, on TV I'm not as picky as in a book.)

That one just highlights why it needs an explanation on how it can still
be the same world with them around. I'd expect he'd done things that
would alter what we see as history, and his present would not be our
world.

So, in the end, it still depends on who makes them up and how he has
them behave.

I think you misunderstood what I mean.

Normal = what we know here for real.

Additions = what someone made up for a story, stuff which doesn't exist
in our real world, but the story is supposedly set in our world.

Problem -> Why does the made-up world look like our world DESPITE that
addition.

Their present would have to look different to ours. More the further
back the difference is.

I'd question a story where those worlds look the same as ours anyway. :)

Tashen chuckled. "One who won't turn us into pigs for it, I'd think."

It's an interesting toy, although right now 3D printers
in general still require too much hand-holding to be really
user-friendly. And I'm learning things about the differences
between specific types of plastic that I'm not sure I ever
really wanted to know. ;P

I have a bunch of old pre-recorded commercial VHS tapes
(still) that would cost hundreds of dollars to replace
with disc media. If the VCR I have hooked up now stops
working, there's another on the shelf below it. If they
both die, I'll start checking pawn shops, charity shops,
and garage sales.

Older consoles, the newest one being a Playstation 2.
I've resisted getting anything newer because a lot of
3D games make me motion-sick. PC games are problematic,
since my primary computer runs a less-popular Linux
distro and I don't find Steam's required client program
*or* their DRM acceptable, which limits me to buying from
GOG and itch.io.

My cats would just *love* the conga rats. To pieces. ;)
