And that's exactly why she served a purpose. In the US the president is both
the chief executive and the head of state. In Britain the two roles are
separate, the prime minister as chief executive and the queen (or now the
king) as the head of state. Thus, aside from the prime minister being spared
all the state dinners and symbolic functions of head of state, he (or rather
she at the moment) can't claim, as presidents sometimes do, that if you
despise them you're somehow are despising the nation as a whole. The queen
understood that distinction and can be honored for scrupulously staying above
politics and for creating a more or less idealized image of what Great Britain
is.

And for the record here are my feelings about the monarchy as outlined

Gas here is almost down to what it was before the inflation started. It's like $3.59 a gallon, maybe even a little less.

I wouldn't argue against that, but millions of people also care about the Kardashians and about professional video game players, and lots of other inane things.

If you care about the Queen dying I suggest you stay away from Bill Maher's monologue from tonight. It was mainly jokes about the queen dying.
