RACE DISK 0’ THE WEEK

"So Long" (2:30) / "It's Raining" (2:38)
RUTH BROWN (Atlantic 879)

RUTH BROWN • This thing will keep ’em standing ten deep in line at juke boxes throughout the nation in no time at all. First wax by thrush Ruth Brown on Atlantic turns out to be one of the greatest pieces of vocal work we’ve heard in many a moon. The gal’s tremendous range of vocal quivers, combined with a ton of depth and feeling, makes this thing the winner it is.
Both sides of this platter, titled “So Long” and “It’s Raining” are hot items for the boxes. Ruth’s warbling of these blues songs is top notch from start to finish, as is the superb musical backdrop furnished by maestro Eddie Condon. The gal’s great voice should have phono fans singing and wailing these songs night and day, and cause a bright spotlight to be focused on
her immediately. It’s the type of material that juke box fans come back and play time and again, and never seem to tire of. Music ops will need no urging with this platter—it’s got hit stamped right on it from the very first chorus. Latch on!
