"Three Coins" is wrong and you're missing three. "Three Coins" was number one in BB on 7-24 (probably not on the sales chart which is all your old book has). The Jaon Weber was not number one in Cash Box until 1-15-55

The only one that you have correct is "Stranger In Paradise."

These 2 are still open.

1950s Music for $300. And the answer is!

His real first name was Rafael, and he graduated from Dorsey High School in California.

1950s Music for $400. And the answer is!

These 4 songs got to #1 on Cash Box's Pop Chart during 1954, but did not get to number one on Billboard's Pop charts. No artists needed, just song titles.

I am dying to know how we both looked at the actual issue and came up with such different results.

Jimmy Charles being black was a big surprise to me but biggest shock
of all I think (tho out of our time range) was discovering that Clint
Holmes ("Playground In My Mind") was black

That chart on P.4 is clearly a JUKE BOX chart "The Nation's Top Ten
Juke Box Tunes"

If you check P.22 of that December 18 1954 Cash Box issue you find the
actual Cash Box Top 50 BEST SELLER chart (compiled from 15,000+ retail
outlets) thar has "Let Me Go Lover" as their No.1 in the Joan Weber
version

Okay, so there's the difference. Frank Hoffman considers the Jukebox chart to be the one that counts until August 4, 1956, and that's what he used for this book. Cash Box was started as a magazine for jukebox operators, so I guess that's why he went to that chart, which comes up in the first few pages of each issue, rather than the sales chart which is much further back in each issue.

Anyway, here's the question I was looking for:

What are "Ricochet", "Stranger In Paradise", "Hernando's Hideaway" and "If I Give My Heart To You."

I don't give much credence to "Juke Box charts" or "Disc Jockey
charts".. For me the chart that REALLY counts is the Best Selling
records chart compiled from actual honest-to-God sales in a cross
section of national record stores.

Best summed up I think by the ancient (but true) British saying "Bums
On Seats" (look it up! :)

I have to disagree. Only a relatively small percentage of people who like and listen to music actually buy records. I prefer a mix of all 3, which is what Billboard's Top 100 and Hot 100 is, although the jukebox part of the equation is long gone.

To me a better indication of a record's overall popularity in those days is what you heard in jukebox spots, on radios, and in businesses as you walked down the street or went into houses and businesses, rather than what was selling the most.

By the time he came along there was a lot more TV exposure, so that
didn't surprise me...but he had one black parent and one white parent so
strictly speaking he is "biracial."

If you go strictly by sales then each consumer can only be counted on one day, when they buy the record. Whether they play it a thousand times, or 3 times can never be measured towards the record's popularity. Maybe they bought it right away without even hearing it because the really like the artist, or maybe they only bought it because they collect the big hits, but did not actually like the record. I did that hundreds of times in the 1980s, when I was DJing, and I knew several people who just automatically bought every 45 that charted on Billboard in those days.

Also, purchases of singles by jukebox operators did not count towards the sales figures, as they were not buying retail. Jukebox operators bought in bulk from distributors.

So that makes me....uh....quadracial?

One half-caste parent/one white parent

One black grandparent/one white grandparent (neither of which I ever
saw)
